Poor Big Bird is having a rough molt this year - she is a strictly hands-off bird right now. Hard to believe that a few weeks ago she was sitting next to me begging for chin scratches. It was weird, she blew half her feathers two days after her last egg.
Looking a little bit ragged...
Aurora - so sorry to hear about your poult :(
Just wanted to say hi. I've been really busy with stuff that I'm not enjoying, but catching up on turkey pictures and news here has been a steady bright spot every day. So thank you for all the reading material and pics :). My birds are doing...
Definitely still here, and keeping up with the news :). We finally got summer here - not nearly as hot as elsewhere in the country, but nice. The birds are loving the drier weather and my garden is finally starting to take off (apparently sunshine is required for growing lol).
Some pictures of...
Been super busy here :). Just been trying to keep up with reading the forum in my free minutes lol. Had my family from New Zealand here visiting, and putting in lots of extra time at work. Thankfully it stays light later now and I still get to visit with the birds when I get home! Been...
Had a few lovely days here - finally! It's been a weird spring - get a sunny day or two and then a week of rain. Only thing growing enthusiastically in my garden is the weeds....grrrr.
Big Bird had a good day today - she gave a ferocious scare to a garter snake (which I quickly ushered to...
My two cents :)
There's gonna be a multitude of opinions lol - my husband finds that my toms gobbles are loud, but they don't sound that loud to me. My turkey hens talk a lot but are no louder than my chickens really.
Perching in trees with the guineas - this would depend on whether they are...
I've used antibiotic ointment without pain reliever on turkeys with no problems....mine are a bit accident prone :) Blu kote also works well if it's a wound that others might peck at. Vetricyn is great for cleaning wounds, but if it looks infected I usually use antibiotic ointment after.
Yay! Things are back up and running :). I didn't realize how much I would miss my daily reading about birds lol. Enjoying watching everyone's pictures. No babies here this year - just trying to hold my population level, so I have to check out everyone else's new bird pictures.
Wow, I feel like I just read a whole novel.... that's what I get for being busy and getting a bit behind
Memphis - glad you survived the storms, and loved the pics of Annie that you posted a bit ago!
Aurora - get your camera busy....want to see pics of the babies snuggled in under mama...
A rare sunny day here, so had the birds out "running" for quite awhile. Big Bird sunned herself beside my chair for most of it, and Bumblebee kept trying to type notes on my ipad while I was attempting to catch up on my email :)
Aurora - we need new Sprinkles pics! Sounds like a handful :). Which tom are you replacing Adam with?
Memphis - Big Bird is the same as your girls, she usually uses the nest box except if she is distracted - then she drops her egg wherever is convenient in the moment
Just to prove we had ONE day (Sunday) without a torrential downpour :). It has been so wet here, and really hard to get anything done. The birds hate rain, so I shoved them all out of their covered runs on our one rain-free day and they had a blast. I pruned trees and they ran around and...
This thread is definitely the place to go to relax after a long day - great reading and a few giggles.
Micah - I can totally picture the turkey on the welcome mat, and I know how determined mine are when they find something they like to look at..... they can't stay away :P
Bantambird - I want...
I definitely have been thinking of running back to New Zealand.... the weather sounds so much more appealing than the swamp I am currently experiencing :)
Big Bird did rip off a toenail, looked like I had a massacre in the barn. Broke her beak too.... I have considered that she may have less...
It has been pouring buckets of rain here - I'm so tired of water (the birds are too). And Big Bird is thinking about being broody again, sigh. I'm lucky with her - at least she's nice about it. I ousted her from her nest box tonight and put her on the roost. She made unhappy fweeping noises...
Chicken math :). I can sometimes go to TSC, because they generally have production breeds (I have better luck talking myself out of those) - but I am in big trouble if I go to a couple of our local feed stores because they get all kinds of cool breeds - Cochins, Sicilian buttercups, brahmas...
Memphis - good to hear that the girls are back on speaking terms :)
We had a rare sunny day here, so I made the most of it... went to TSC and emerged unencumbered, cleaned barns and coops, let the birds run free, did some flower bed cleaning and put out the hummingbird feeders since I got...
So proud of myself today.....made it in and out of TSC without anything that cheeps, peeps or quacks  I'm usually banned from feed stores until after baby season is done!
Wow Ralph - that is an impressive chicken!
Feedman - woo hoo, eggs!!!!! I see incubators warming in your future :)
Aurora - adorable baby.
Memphis - Sorry to hear that the girls are being temperamental :(. Spring seems to do that to my turkeys as well - the chickens don't seem to even notice...
