Most commercial layer feed contains a maximum of 3.6% calcium which has not been shown to be harmful to adult male poultry.R2 those were really good articles. Thanks. The calcium debate rages on here at BYC, but seldom does it include the two critical questions you eluded to: How much is too much? and How young is too young? Another issue is that all feeds are not created equal. I've seen layer mixes with up to 200 pounds of Oyster Shell per ton, which I believe is crazy.
There is no doubt that all feeds are not created equally which is why I tend to qualify my statements with a "quality" feed when making recommendations. There are a number of large commercial feed brands that do not fit my view of a quality feed. These particular brands of feed are made with the sole purpose of making the manufacturer a profit and they have no interest in the health of the purchaser's poultry.
Edited to correct calcium percentage that was entered due to "CRS".
