    Is this fowl pox?

Looks like I would have to go to the vet for that ointment but I did buy vetericyn and iodine off of amazon and hopefully those help once they get here. I gave the coop and run a good cleaning this morning and am just hoping for the best. She is acting pretty normal this today but one of her...

    Is this fowl pox?

I got back after week out of town with someone else watching my chickens and discovered one of my ladies has a swollen and crusty face. She’s half silkie, about a year and a half old, and usually very broody. She still has a normal appetite but has a bit less energy. My two full silkies have a...

    Crusty looking beak

The fencing is 1/2 (or maybe 1/4?) inch hardware cloth and they mainly eat out of bowls. I’ve never seen them put their beaks through the fencing or even near it really. They do have a bit of trouble seeing lately as their crests have really came in (I’m still working up the courage to give them...

    Crusty looking beak

Does anybody know why my silkies beak looks like this? I noticed my other one had a crusty looking beak a few weeks ago (photo below) and now this one (top photo) has it too. They are otherwise completely healthy and are almost 11 weeks old.

    Silkie Genders

It’s so hard waiting to find out! When my older bantams were 6 weeks old all of the boys were already crowing.

What Breeds Are My Bantams from TSC

Maybe that’s what she is! She’s flighty and terrified of the world (her name suits her!), lays a creamish tan color egg, has really pretty iridescent feathers, has a bit of black on her comb, and complains like a loud pterodactyl if I don’t give her treats. I call her my feral chicken. Whatever...

    Silkie Genders

I know it’s way too early but I’m having my suspicions and want to see if anyone else has any opinions! I bought fertile eggs from a breeder in Florida and incubated these muppet babies myself! (First time incubating- 4 were clears, one was scrambled, one stopped developing around day 7, and 4...

What Breeds Are My Bantams from TSC

Panda- Blue OEGB Poppy- B.B. Red? OEGB Petal- Splash OEGB Primrose- Gold Sebright Pansy- her breed is a mystery but I think it’s possible she’s a poorly bred black Sumatra (I think they were from ideal and black Sumatra is on their bantam list) I just wanted to update everyone on my...

    July Hatch-a-Long

All 4 of mine were on the wrong end and all 4 hatched! Just the one needed a little bit of assistance after 26 hours because it zipped through the shell and not the membrane and was kicking to get out. It just needed a little bit of membrane pulled back and it got out on its own after that .

    July Hatch-a-Long

Yours are so cute! And that’s how I feel too. I didn’t take it out of the shell, just chipped enough away that it could get itself out. I feel like if I waited longer it would’ve gotten too tired. It was strange too because my humidity was high but the chick came out halfway dry and the...

    July?

So an update on how everything went... I replied earlier about the how long I left them vertical without turning and the 4 infertile and 1 scrambled eggs. I’m not sure if I also mentioned I found one that was an early quitter (somewhere around day 7-10). So that left 4 eggs. I put them into...

    July Hatch-a-Long

So I peeled off just a bit more and the little cutie popped out about a minute later! I’m glad I followed my instinct on that one. Everything was absorbed and all looks good! All four are here and drying off in the bator! I’m beyond thrilled!

    July Hatch-a-Long

I couldn’t really see any tears in the membrane. I peeled just a bit of the shell and the membrane at the top where it already had broken off some shell and then put it back in. It’s kicking a bit better now. If nothing progresses in the next 30 minutes or so I’ll peel it just a bit more. It...

    July Hatch-a-Long

The fourth is almost hatched but the third one seems stuck. It has zipped about 3/4 around (maybe more) but isn’t breaking the membrane and keeps trying to kick but can’t make it out. Do I need to help? It’s been over 26 hours since the first pip

    July Hatch-a-Long

My third has almost fully zipped so it should be here soon! The 4th hasn’t really made any progress and I haven’t seen it move or heard it chirp. It is almost 24 hours so once the third chick hatched I’m going to take a closer look

    July Hatch-a-Long

My temperature is dropping to 97.9 (maybe because of high humidity from them hatching?). Is this too low? I know some people hatch a bit lower but I’m not sure if I should raise it. Any thoughts?

    July Hatch-a-Long

So two are out (the first two that pipped) and this has really been a lesson on being patient! Now just two more :) Here’s the second part of the live stream happening now...

One has hatched!!!! The one that had a bloody spot on the membrane hatched! I’m such a proud chickymama!

    July Hatch-a-Long

Still no progress on my four eggs :/ At 10 pm tonight they will all be over 24 hours since external pip. I’m starting to think I may need to begin looking up assisting but am so hoping they will all just zip and hatch by then. No zipping has really happened. One has made a decent hole and has...

    July Hatch-a-Long

Thanks! So far not much progress... but the one who pipped towards the ground does appear to have actually got in the air cell and I’m still seeing movement in three of the eggs (the bloody one chirped at me I think). One of the eggs I don’t really see any movement and there hasn’t been any...
