The hen seems to be doing just fine today...She has not laid anything else (egg or otherwise)...I will continue to watch her and make sure that no further problems develop...I will continue to keep everyone updated and see about getting the object that she laid to the vet to see if they can take...
Thanks for all the quick responses tonight! It seems like the consensus is that she was likely egg bound yet was showing no signs other than having not layed an egg in a while which I thought was a result of the trauma from her pecking incident...I am apparently very lucky that she has passed...
Do not put any more of the chickens down...I had something very similar happen to one of my hens as three of the other hens nearly pecked it to death...When I found it I felt so bad that I brought it inside and nearly didn't sleep that night! I called in late to work the next day and took the...
No rats at all anywhere near the chickens I have never even seen a rat on my property...This item has a skin around it that you can see in the photos that is very similar to skin on a piece of chicken...It had a raw chicken smell and although it certainly looks like an egg roll I can assure you...

This was very interesting and fairly similar except our didn't look near as much like an egg as this one did...It still did not explain exactly what the object was or why it occurred!
Regarding the object actually being an egg roll it is impossible as the chicken is contained into a...
She had not laid an egg in over a month but had been really traumatized from a pecking incident that left her entire backside both featherless and skinless...I didn't really expect her to start laying anytime soon because of the incident as she is not fully healed yet and still lives on her...
I thought the same thing once I went back and looked at the pics...The strange thing is that it smells just like chicken would if you took frozen chicken out to cook it...This thing is very strange and nearly made me and my fiance sick at first glance because we thought it was some kind of egg...
Today my fiance went out to feed and water our chickens and noticed that "Bokie", a hen we just recently placed back outside after rehabilitating her inside for a pecking injury, had laid a very strange object. The object was frozen at first due to cold temperature but when I got home I decided...
I just recently increased the size of my flock of ducks...I now have four khaki campbells, 1 pekin, and 1 "brown" duck that I am not really sure what she is (very similar to a khaki campbell though)...The flock is currently housed in a 6'x8' chain link dog kennel and seem happy. I want to...

How well do you think this would work with the plastic waterers? I have a couple plastic waterers that I currently use and I refuse to switch to metal and pay $40 for a water heater...I would rather change to water twice a day then waste $80 on heaters...Also what wattage bulb do you use inside...
I plan on using a linoleum floor and pine pellets in my coop to really help reduce problems and make cleanup as easy as possible...I am contemplating using shredded paper in the coop, but I am definitely using it in the nesting boxes...Good luck with your coop!
It is definitely heavier than I originally planned but with two relatively strong guys it could still be moved without too much trouble...I currently plan on just using the coop on the ground until I complete the square foot gardens and my fence this spring and then I can let the girls free...
I finally got a chance to get back to work on my square foot chicken coop today! It is almost complete with the exception of adding the roost, putting the quarter-round trim into place, adding some 2" holes around the top of the sides and covering with chicken wire for extra ventilation and...
I spent a little more time today working on my new chicken coop...Still have a few things to work on such as hanging some type flower box on the front of the coop...
View from the front with all four walls in place...Hopefully adding a flower box on front of chicken coop
View of back wall...
I also was wondering if I can allow my chicken and ducks to access this coop or will the ducks even be interested in going inside the coop? They currently share the same outdoor run and are getting along fine after some initial anxiety...I am working on building an area for the ducks to have on...
We made a lot of progress today and the coop is nearing completion...Here are some pics from today's construction:
The new chicken coop with lower door and flooring complete
The vinyl flooring inside the coop for easier clean up
The front of the new chicken coop...I am still working on a...
I may go back and put hardware cloth on the inside and keep the chicken wire on the outside...Gotta try to pick up some chicken wire today from the store...Thanks for the suggestions...Now I just have to decide if I want to use OSB board and paint it for the top or get T-111 for the top...Keep...
I have a 6'x8' chain link dog kennel that I will attach the coop to for the chickens during the day...I am using chicken wire because that is what I had available and I live in the city so there are not very many predators...I am contemplating adding electric fencing around all of the coop and...
Once I get the plywood on the roof to screw the fiberglass paneling to I am going to try to turn it the "right" direction for the water to flow off the roof but I am just making do with what I can to make it fit because the fiberglass panels are left over from my last project. I am really not...
