    Tiny Egg

The other day, and occasionally my hens will lay TINY eggs, I mean TINY. I am now wondering if this indicates any health issues and if I should be concerned...It doesn't happen often, but it has happened often enough for me to be concerned.... -Paul

    Blood on feeders

I have been noticing a bit of blood on one of my hanging grain feeders. Though there are six hens and two roosters, the roosters do not fight and there is not blood to be found on there bodies. My grandfather says he saw a rat in the pen when he checked on them because they were squaking. Do you...

cooked a freshly culled bird...too tough, whats wrong and what to do?

Quote: Do you crock pot them whole? Got a recipe? We are getting rid of a 6 month old roo and my family has never eaten a DP breed older roo. they are used to grocery store birds.

how long do I raise PRs for?

My RIR roo is 6 months old and I would definitely butcher him now, I am assuming their growth rates are quite similar. If it were a hen I would not even think about butchering her at 6months. if you are ordering from a hatchery I am sure that they are more of the egg production types and will...

    Chop or Neck Slit?

My theory is that when you slit the neck it makes them unconscious in nearly seconds due to the rapid blood loss. I am assuming they essentially just pass right out. Is this true?

RIR Roo VS Buff Orpington Roo

Well the orpington is mean to me not really the hens. I care more about which one will make better DP crosses.

RIR Roo VS Buff Orpington Roo

I just got two free roosters from an ad on craigslist. Two really nice 6 month old guys - no spurs yet. They were from McMurray but they are HUGE! Anyway I am debating on which one will go in the freezer and which one will stay with the girls. Eggs, are great but meat is equally as great. 50/50...

I am such a softie... Should I turn vegetarian?

Quote: It may be easier but as far as being the most compassionate and humane methods they would not fit. You really are raising a bird that is "crippled by it's genetics" like fancbrd4me had said. It may be easy for you to process them but really it is just as sad to watch them try to live...

Does anyone have price configurations for heritage breeds or freedom rangers? Also, is there any hatcheries cheaper than JM for the FR birds? Can they be kept over and bred to heritage hens for just some more meatier birds?

I am such a softie... Should I turn vegetarian?

I have been Vegetarian for almost two years this coming summer and I could never have felt better morally and physically. Though most people have this feeling that vegetarians are against killing animals -- they are not necessarily. Saying I am a vegetarian does nothing but identify my diet in...

    Freedom Rangers

The freedom rangers from JM hatchery...are they sustainable? Can I keep hens and roo's and have chicks. I do understand they are hybrids but a meat chicken to meat chicken should make a....meat chicken. I don't care if they are broody, I have other hens and an incubator... Has anyone ordered...

Humane ways of killing our meat birds

Quote: I have heard of this method in rabbits but I though with the much more delicate legs that the point of breaking would be much quicker on the legs thus causing more suffering.

    Meat birds BESIDES Cornish X??

The last few weeks of my spare time has been devoted to finding the best meat breed that is not a CornishX. I have found Dark Cornish, and White Rocks. Both carry some of the characteristics of the crosses just not as severe. You will find that these breeds will be hardly comparable with growth...
