Turning old run into a garden bed???

I'm moving my run to another spot in the yard. The old spot is just so stinky. I want to till it up and turn it into a garden bed. What do I need to do? Is the ground to "too hot" to plant anything this year? Will the stink go away on it's on or this thee something I can put down to speed up the...

    Winter Behavior??

When it gets bitter cold--do your chickens come out or do they stay in the coop? This is my first winter and just curious. My hens come out in the rain--so I'm wondering what they will do when the cold weather moves in.

There is still some sand on the floor of the coop--should I get it all out or just leave it in and put the shavngs over the sand?

    DLM---Small Coop?

I have a small 4x4 coop that houses my three Golden Comets--it has a small door that they go in and out of to get to their run. I plan on putting a small board in front of the opening to keep the shavings from being tracked out. I think the deepest I will be able to get the shavings is 4 inches...

    Clipping Wings--Fly at all?

Darn--I was hoping they wouldn't be able to get out. They are Golden Comets--they pretty good about staying, but occasion one of my girls likes to explore the outdoor world. Looks like they will only be getting a little bit of free range time this winter--I'm too big of a sissy to stay out in...

    Clipping Wings--Fly at all?

I have my girl's coop and run in a 25x25 fenced in garden. I let them out daily for a few hours when I am working in the yard and occasionally I have to go get one off the the fence--whcih is about three feet tall. With cold weather approaching, I would still like to let them out, but I don't...

Squatting, but no red comb or wattle???

I have three Golden Comets that are 21 weeks old. One started laying last Friday, but nothing from the other two yet. Of the two not laying, the one with the least developed comb/wattle is squatting all the time. Is it possible to start laying without the red comb/wattle? The other with the more...

    Question about light and laying

If I do not supplement light in the winter and they get a break--will they lay for a longer amount of years? Do they completely stop laying in the winter? I have three Golden Comets that are 20 weeks old--one has started laying, but the other two have not. Since the days are shorter--will they...

    What do I have here???

My daughter bought the cutest little pair of cochins at the fair, but sadly one died. So I put a listing on Craigslist saying we needed some baby chicks so the little guy wouldn't be so lonely. My DH picked them up and didn't asked what breed they are. I texted a pic to the lady, but she...

    IT has arrived!!!!!

I came home from work yesterday to check the coop yet again--something was different!! I am using a wicker basket for a nest box and it had been moved to the center of the coop and there in the middle of the basket was the FIRST egg!! Pure excitement--I couldn't get the door open fast enough. It...

    The waiting, the waiting!!!!

I do have one that is squatting all the time and very vocal--constant clucking when I walk up--don't know if that means anything--she's always been a complainer. May I will have eggs for a Labor Day breakfast--fingers crossed!

Some things I have learned since I started raising chickens...

I've had my girls since Easter and I have learned that: Like in real life, there's always one that is gripping about something (Our Olivia is always complaining) Chickens have the cutest butts. Raccoons are not so cute anymore! That waiting for one little egg could preoccupy my time the way it has.

Is it too late to be friendly chickens??

My girls are 19 weeks old and I so wanted to have lap chickens, but the only time they will get in my lap is if I have treats. I will sit in the chair, but they want nothing to do with me. I still try to hold them but they squirm and flap. One is little more friendly than the others. I go out...

    Starting to worry about Winter!

They are Golden Comets. So they will still forage in the winter? Right now I'm pretty diligent about keeping the poop board scraped, but I know I'm not going to want to go out daily in the winter, would a once a week scrap be ok for a coop as small as mine?

    Starting to worry about Winter!

Here's a pic of my coop: I plan on putting shutters over the window when the cold weather gets here. Right now I have sand on the floor in the coop--should I put some shavings over that in the winter? Their water is now outside in a plastic container with nipples on the bottom. I plan on...

    The waiting, the waiting!!!!

I put there nest box in a few weeks ago with a fake egg. Every morning when I go to check--they have pushed the fake egg out and it's empty. I think they are trying to tell me something:lol:
