Is Broody Chick Adoption a Biosecurity Problem?

Unfortunately, the move from big coop to broody coop broke the broody! The chicks are happy in their brooder box.

    Uh Oh :(

I think @25chickens is right - at this age, it's normal for them to have a small comb.

Is Broody Chick Adoption a Biosecurity Problem?

Thanks guys! She has been stubborn in the past, I think she's only on her second week for this round. If it works out I will try to remember to post some photos!

    Hens or Roos

I can't help with the breeds, but the picture below may help you figure out if they are pullets or cockerels. Just look at each chicken's saddle feathers!

    Is this a cockerel?

It doesn't look like a cockerel to me! Cockerels have long, pointy saddle feathers, and pullets have rounded, petal-shaped saddle feathers. That's what maks me think this one looks more like a pullet, but the saddle isn't completely clear in the photo.

Is Broody Chick Adoption a Biosecurity Problem?

If it makes any difference, the chicks and mama will be separated from the main flock, in our small quarantine coop.

Is Broody Chick Adoption a Biosecurity Problem?

@viennaproto Thanks for the advice! I'm concerned that if I wait too long, the hen will not adopt the chicks, and the chicks will not bond to the hen. These chicks will come from a hatchery.

    Round up Pesticide

If you were to use RoundUp, I would fence the area off for quite a while, even up to a month. I would suggest looking for a more pet-safe option, if one exists.

Is Broody Chick Adoption a Biosecurity Problem?

Hello all! I was planning to try and get my stubborn broody to adopt some chicks I have coming when a thought came to mind. Is this a biosecurity issue? Is introducing my healthy hen to hatchery chicks a biosecurity problem? Is it likely the chicks will be carriers of anything at such a young...

    Egg bound hen? Please advise.

I don't know what to do! What kind of treatment can I offer her?

    Carolina Coops - California Coop

About getting more chickens, that's a definite issue to think about! You never know how many chickens you'll end up wanting the future.

    Carolina Coops - California Coop

I live in a similar climate, and that coop looks lovely! I appreciate the windows in the hen house, especially. The extra ventilation would be essential for the hot summers, and it looks warm enough for a California winter. I don't know much about automatic run doors, but I find it enjoyable to...

    Egg bound hen? Please advise.

She is walking normally, if a little slower. She laid an egg a couple days ago (I think). She may have laid a fairy egg recently. I'm having trouble keeping track between chickens because we have more than one light-brown egg layer. Her tail is a little droopy, but not completely down when she's...

    Egg bound hen? Please advise.

    1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Ginny is a Speckled Sussex. I believe she is 3 years old (not completely positive on that). I don't know her weight, but she doesn't seem to be lighter than normal. 2) What is the behavior...

    Chicken acting sluggish, not active.

If she is trying to pass an egg, how can I help her? Calcium mash? Massage?

    Chicken acting sluggish, not active.

Okay! We just had to cull a chicken a few months ago, and her report came back as a reproductive issue too. Hopefully, she's just trying to pass a weird egg. Is it at all plausible that the runny poop could be an egg either cracked or, if soft-shelled, "popped", inside her? It's about the same...

    Chicken acting sluggish, not active.

Not sure exactly when she last laid. I would say it was 3-4 days ago. Her crop feels fine, but her abdomen feels much more low-hanging than the other chickens'. Does anyone know what this means?

3 and a half week old chicks outside for a few hours each day?

It looks like they have a lot of feathers, so that makes me think they should be okay. The most important thing is to watch them for any signs they might be cold - huddling together, alarmed cheeping for a long time, etc. Just bring them inside if that happens!

    Netting / covering advice needed

We use poultry netting, but it isn't super sturdy. I think hardware cloth is the best long-term option!
