So a few miles from my house there has been a lot of work being done to clear a lot and begin construction on some large facility. Every time we drive by wondering what they are building...until today.
So Tyson is building a chicken cloning facility. I have like 1,000 questions about this but...
So my polish roo has had concussions before from fighting and I have had a polish hen run into a wall and knock herself out once, but this time I have a roo that ran into the closed coop door last night and knocked himself out. He was out for about 5-10 minutes before standing up punch drunk. I...
Local guy has this listed for sale. Wondering if anyone has any information on them. From my quick search it appears that it is heated using light bulbs which seems unusual for a retail incubator.
Brand is Floral Arts. Inc.
So I started with a white crested black polish rooster and a red polish hen, purely by happenstance. The offspring are beautiful with a rooster as my avatar.
The second generation were then bred and the chicks hatched Easter weekend. I am amazed at the variety of colors in this chicks at this...
My chickens get most of their food from foraging over their 2,000sf run and also have layer pellets available along with some scratch grains as treats. They do well at laying and when I had two hens go broody last summer they had great hatch rates.
I am wondering if there is anything specific...
4 roosters in the hen house, 6 hens, 2 roosters are slated to depart tomorrow but still have a question about what unfolded this morning.
I was working near the run this morning (250sf of run space) and 3 of the roosters were doing their morning sparring. 2 of them are about 6 months old and...
So I am not new to raising chickens, but have only done one incubator hatch. I have had a few broody hens who we let hatch and raise their clutch.
Here is my crazy question. Why is everyone so quick to candle and discard eggs from the incubator?
I saw one post this past week that someone...
First hatch started this morning and so far so good. Here is a picture of the first 5. Currently 6 of 14 have hatched and 4 others have pipped. Today was day 20 so apparently my temp was moderately high. Hoping to wake up to a few more in the morning.
I think these look about right but thought I would post for opinions.
I only marked the one egg in the middle, first line is day 12 and second line is day 16. Humidity is hovering between 25-30%.
Thanks for looking.
I have a digital thermostat on the way to refine the temps in my incubator from the manual one in the hova-bator.
I am hoping someone here has worked out the numbers already that can give me a starting point for setting mine up for best performance.
Below are my observations, if you see...
I am going on a search today in town to the Co-op, TSC, and a couple feed stores to look for a replacement incubator wafer. Has anyone had any luck buying one of these locally or is this something that is only available online for the most part?
I know this has probably been covered here somewhere but I haven't located an answer for my question.
I picked up a small used Hova-bator 1602, the old style not the new. It has a small fan added under the lid.
I have been working to adjust the thermostat and I have it so it kicks on at 93.5...
Quick intro. When I was young I raised chickens for meat and eggs in Montana. Then I grew up and had to get a job. That is why I say I am new again.
So I retired a year ago this month from 23 years in the Army. My wife has been with me the whole long journey. We retired to a 7 acre spread in...
So I have a broody hen who will hit day 21 in a couple days who is brooding in her nest box about 3 feet off the floor. The question is what to do when/if the chicks hatch? I can't fit food and water in the nest box for the chicks, do I just move them to the floor and let the hen find a nesting...
