I have a 6 year Pekin girl who no longer lays eggs. Every now and again she will sit for a few days. She's always been known for going broody - has raised more chicks than layed eggs I think!
She's been hand raised so she's never been bothered about me fussing around under her, so normal...
I'm looking to get some Brahma's shortly, but am a bit stuck as to what colours they are.
If you guys (and gals) could post pics of yours and what colours they are. I've found lots of pages that list the colours but not with a photo - not really very helpful....
Thanks in advance for your...
We've bought a new coop to replace our old one.
I'm painting this one instead of leaving it bare wood.
My question is, do I paint the inside where they sleep a dark colour to make it cosy to sleep? I've seen some mixed ideas, some are saying to paint it white to make it 'bright and fresh'...
Thanks for that. I'll move the food and water in.I had considered it but wasn't quite sure. When she does go outside I have to stay nearby so the other girls don't pick on her. She is definately a house chicken! Mum decided after she hatched her that she had done her bit so we raised her and...
My hand raised little Pekin girl, Ginger, is broody for the first time - and to make you all have a giggle, she decided to do this in-between the pillows on our bed - after a lot of convincing we got her as far as a box next to our bed!
The problem we are having is that she won't leave her...
My Muscovy girl was spooked by a cat that came into our back yard and flew into the park near our home, we live in suburbia not on on a property.
I eventually found her in but she wouldn't let me near her, even though she is usually very sociable, we hand raised her. I know she was scared, but...
Hi all,
I've had and hatched lots of chickens (putting eggs under broodies) but I decided to get Turkeys and Ducks this time.
Now I've seen the size of both of my chicks Mamma and Pappa and the size difference was huge, with Turkeys being on the huge side of huge!
My babies seem to be the...
Hi all, hopefully somebody can shine a light on what's going on and what I can do about it..
My Rhode Island Red in plucking out her feathers bebahind her neck and abiove her tail and on her chest. I've had a look and her skin seems perfectly clear of any bugs, mites or injury.
At night she...

haha, made me realise all the things I should've included!
- I haven't wormed her lately, but will do tomorrow
- poops seem normal
- she's definately not broody, that's the other Pekin! hee hee
- can't see any mites and she doesn't seem to be scratchy at all
- great minds think alike...
My 3 year old Pekin bantam won't drink and her comb is very pale. She still pecks around on the ground and eats and I gave her some spinich this morning and she pecked at that okay too.
She seems very tired and will tuck her head under and sleep all the time until I wake her to try to give her...
Thanks, I'll take them away now and after work I'll open up, although bit nervous about what to expect.
Funny, I can sit though a whole afternoon watching Saw movies but I'm nervous opening up an egg!!!
I bought the eggs fertilised at the same time and popped them all under straight away.
Have tried candling, but can't see through them at all. Either because I'm not doing it right or because they are brown eggs.
The eggs look in great shape, no nicks, bad smell or anything, just like a...
I have 2 eggs left from my 6. The 3 surviving chickies are doing great!
They are now running around outside the henhouse with Mum and she takes them home each night. The other chooks all stay away and don't give them any trouble.
I put 1 chick with Cochin Bantum mum (I had 2 go broody at...
Thanks, don't know where I'd be without BYC! At least it's all normal I was wondering why they would leave the eggs to go poop and sand bath etc but not the babies. Initially I put food bowls not even a metre away and even that was too far for them! Perhaps they really aren't so different to...
Out of 6 eggs that I put under my 2 broody hens 4 have hatched so far.
One chick died, it seemed that one of the mums has pecked at the chicks eyes, I tried to save it but it was too far gone also have another has been pecked only a little. I've moved that chick inside with the 'good' mum and...
Thanks heaps everyone, I've decided to leave them where they are and will watch to make sure the other hens don't hassle them, first sign then I'll put them inside. I'd like to keep the mum's and chickies together though, even without being sentimental (which I am!) the practical side of warmth...
Thanks Dill, if I seperate the 2 Mums from the chicks after they hatch do I need to use a heat lamp or anything?
I thought that having the Mothers there meant that warmth etc was dealt with. We are in Spring now, so it's not cold at night.
And, this might sound daft, do the mothers get...
I have 2 mum's sitting on bought fertilised eggs. They are due to hatch tomorrow, should I move them all inside my house?
I can't seperate them from the rest of the flock as there is no way of closing off part of their area so that they can still have access to theie house.
This is my first...
I've got 2 broody hens!
Penny the Cochin Bantam and Hazel the Wynodotte have both decided to sit on everybody's eggs...
I was a bit slow on the uptake and didn't realise what was going on! So I just thought it was a coincidence that everytime I went out Hazel was sitting in the box, then I...
Can't believe what a bad bad rooster day it is today!
My friend where he will going phoned this afternoon.
Unfortunately, he rang to say that my first rooster, Lucy the Rhode Island was taken by a fox today, in broad daylight too!
It was unfortunate and I know these are the risks of free...
