We moved to the country in 2003. A friend gave me some bantams the next year. The rest is history! At the moment I have 5 guineas, 9 cochins, 24 barred rocks, 6 silkies, 3 Americanas, and a single old English Game hen who is nearly 8 years old. I have to be careful because I'm really bad about...
Field rats tunnel under fences also. I lost one of my roosters this week. His head and neck were just bones when I found him. He was in a cage and the rat had pulled him through the cage. Cage was in very secure coop and run. I found the tunnel under another cage with roosters in. They weren't...
I love my Silkies! They are smart enough to avoid the hawks that fly over and warn the rest of my flock of danger. I free range my flock all day and everyone comes running at dusk for treats and to be put up for the night.
My oldest hen is my Old English Game Hen. She is over 8 years old and still loves raising chicks, ANY chicks! She even raised Guinea keets one year. She's here for life!
I now understand chicken math! My brother wanted some guineas. I went to Atwoods to pick some up for him. I walked out with 6 more guineas, 4 new Ameraucanas, and 2 new feather legged bantams! Have to stay out of there till chick days is OVER!
Still reading near Hot Springs. Just picked up some chicks at TSC on Wednesday for Valentine's Day. Put my black silkie in with them that night and thankfully she has accepted them! Sleepless night till I was sure of her.
One of my favorite bantams had a prolapse vent last spring. I washed her and reinserted the prolapse. Then I put a little bit of a peroration H inside to shrink the vent back down. I had to do this twice to her. I kept her in the house for 2 weeks to make sure she was ok. She totally took over...
The mixed rule says you can buy 2 bantams, 2 ducks, 2 standards as long as your total is 6 or more you are good. It is in place to stop people from buying 1 or 2 chicks for Easter gifts. Hope this information helps explain a little better.
