ER Veterinary Assistant and many years experience in cat/feline rescue, just lacking experience and knowledge of this type when it comes to poultry. Very comfortable with the aspirating/lancing and giving IM medication or oral. Can't afford a $600+ vet bill for a bird with only a few months left...
4 year old pet coturnix quail, male, with golf ball sized abscess on wing. Plans on aspirating with a sterile needle to remove the pus, but need to know best type and dosage of antibiotic. Local tractor supply has penicillin, but is there a better option? Let me know what you all think is best...
Its really unfortunate, all I seem to post about here is medical issues. I put so much effort into helping birds but I seem to always fail the poor babies.
Hello, I have a two week old leghorn chick with a slipped tendon. The chick is not technically mine, I took him in to be a companion for another chick that had severely bent toes and the person did not care to fix unfortunately. The chicks were going to be returned once the foot issue was fixed...
It is really unfortunate, she eventually gave up on the eggs sadly. Even worse, the latch on her hutch broke and she escaped and was sadly gotten by a dog. She was my favorite quail and is dearly missed.
I was going to bring him to the vet if it didnt clear up with the antibiotics or of others got sick. Thankfully no one else is sick, and his eye is almost completely healed! The swelling has gone down completely and the redness is gone. This is just with using antibiotic ointment in the eye and...
Update:
I have been gently squeezing the eye to remove pus and applying antiobiotic in the eye multiple times per day. The swelling has gone down a bit! I have ordered the antibiotics and they should be here within the next few days. No one else appears sick, and I have disinfected all of the...
Just posted photos, sorry i didnt have any earlier! He has been housed with the same birds his whole life, and they usually get along very well. He hasnt been introduced to any new birds other than the ones i hatched out myself a few months ago. I have no idea how hed get sick qithout any...
(Sorry for so many responses)
Im really worried about all of my birds. I do not want to have to cull anyone (i dont know if i could, ive raised these guys from babies and adore them). How should i go about treatment? I will be going to the feed store to get antibiotics today. Going to look for...
Just went and checked on him (hes quarantined and in the garage because its very hot outside) and hes still pretty active (fought me trying to pick him up and stuff). The eye didnt smell at all. Heres a picture of both eyes.
1) Male coturnix quail, healthy weight, about a year and a half old.
2) Very swollen eye with discharge, other eye less swollen but still with discharge. Nasal discharge as well i think?
3) I handle them daily and i only noticed last night? Could it have happened that quickly?
4) All of my other...
My zebra finch, Zachary, is around 5 years old and he has unfortunately lost his mate and his budgie friend (one due to illness, the other due to old age). I need to find him a new companion, and am wondering if i should get a male or female. I have read that they will bond with another finch...
Hello! This is the only picture I have of the popsicle sticks, but i hope it helps! I actually moved the sticks after this so they were tighter around the egg. It is still important that there is some space between the egg and the sides so they can roll properly, so just keep adjusting and...
This poor coturnix quail chick has had a very rough start. He is two or three days old and doesnt look underweight, but he has hardly eaten yet which is worrying me a lot. He actually was trying to hatch for two days before i finally decided to help him hatch. I ended up chipping away at the...
