Thank you for the advice, I ended up using shavings and some hay that fell out of my horse's hay net when I was stuffing it. I will see later if it worked I think my other two hens might be close to laying too.
I found an egg today, the very first egg from my first flock! I didn't think they were old enough to lay yet and had the nest boxes closed off.
Do I open them up and add... what does one put in them, straw, shavings? Do I need to add the egg to the nest to get them to lay there?
I found...
Use a cotton ball moistened with warm water or soft cloth and gently rub it's belly/hind end should do the trick( or dress for work/town, they always pee on you then!). Does the kit seem shaped like a hook , as in the hind end is curled to it's belly? That is one way to tell if it is a peanut...
Are these dwarf breed rabbits? Peanuts are ones with a double dwarfing gene and it is usually 98% fatal. If the kit is eliminating waste then it is most likely a runt, peanuts usually have incomplete digestive/urinary systems. Three or four days is usually the maximum time they survive. I hope...
Whoa, I totally missed the big girl pants part , that being said, I have no idea why you are quoting me and pointing out cases of animals that lived with (insert deformity here) and getting defensive. The second quote said in my opinion, which is just that, my opinion. I stated my opinion after...
*Sigh* As I iterated before the response to your first post, wasn't an attack. Sometimes things come across wrongly over the internet. That said, in my opinion the chick IF it survives hatching will most likely not survive, or have any decent quality of life.
Obviously something went wrong in the chicks development. ChickenCanoe gave an answer as to what may have went wrong and what to do about it. I am overly sensitive to a fault and I do not see anything rude about the post in answer to OP. It was a bit harsh, but entirely accurate and true...
We tend to have cooler weather, fog and wind. The temps are approximately 63F (17 C) to 45 F (7C) on average. We are subject to coastal conditions which means the hotter inland, the foggier , cooler it is here in summer.
He gets along well with the chooks still in the brooder.
So, anyone have an idea when he will get feathered enough to go out? Here is an updated pic of Baldy, he/she is about 3 1/2 weeks now. Here is one of his hatch mate "Disco", for comparison .
Thank you all for the information! I am really new to chickens and birds in general (I'm a mammal sort of person). The birds in question are approx 7 weeks old. I am relieved to hear that I don't need to panic about eggs happening soon.
The chooks are still in their transition housing as...
I just had to share one of my polish just started crowing, the teeniest, silly noises ever.
Alas, it was one that I was sure was a pullet .(Now it seems my D'uccle cockerel is having a crow off with the polish)
Can pullets the same age start laying?
I have not switched their feed away from the...
Thanks for all the replies. I am wondering now too if he is a frazzle. I am finding broken bits of wee black curly feathers in the brooder. I have not observed any feather pulling or pecking from the others, not to say it isn't happening. Baldy (his name so far) seems to be a favorite for the...
new chicken owner and from the local feed store I picked two from the group labeled black Cochin pullets and then in another brooder 1 bantam frizzle . I am very confused since they are all frizzled and no idea what size or gender they will be. That said they are sort of cute, but they need to...
I think we have the exact same coop for temporary housing until the big hen & silkie palace, uh....coop and run are finished.
We dug out a level area and added about 8 in of gravel, next a bottom frame of pressure treated wood with hardware cloth stapled to the very bottom. We then set the coop...
I got my trio because they were so ugly they were cute as wee chicks. I really like mine there is something sort of regal and silly about them at the same time. I have no idea how many people have them where I live. Folks do seem to recoil slightly when seeing them for the first time. I am...
Oh that is good to know, I was scared they had mites or something.
Here he/she is. My husband says it's because it is a cockerel. Poor wee thing looks so shabby compared to the others.
Hi, I'm new to the whole chicken thing and one of my 2 week old cochins is, well, very bald in patches. I can see new feathers forming in some of the spots but some places no fuzz and no feathers. The only odd behavior is the chick likes to waddle/crawl to the feeder instead of standing up...
