Are calla lilies poisonous to chickens?

We have cala lilies that grow in our chicken run. They never ate them before but have started eating them now. I see mixed things on the net. Does anyone know if they are poisonous to our girls? They obviously aren't super toxic because otherwise our girls would be dead, but even if they are...

    A broody chicken

HI y'all. One of my hens went broody a few days ago. I have two questions. And just for background, my hens are pets and I look at them in that light. 1. When she first went broody, she would get up in the morning and eat. I haven't seen her do that in the last 2 days. She may have done it...

    A good scale

Hi everyone. I posted a couple of weeks ago about a sick hen. Well, after some vet visits she's on the mend. I'm really happy. The vet said it would be a good idea to get a scale so I can weigh my live hens every month because weight loss is an easy way to see if a hen is getting sick before she...

How to treat a chicken with a cold (maybe?)

I posted a couple of days ago. I thought my hen was egg bound, but she wasn't. We noticed she had some congestion when she was breathing so I brought her to the vet. She had been eating and drinking and pooping fairly normally. She just wasn't moving. The vet was going to X-ray her, but said...

One of my hens didn't come out of the coop this morning

Hi everyone. Normally all 4 of my hens bolt out the coop in the morning when I let them out. This morning one of my hens (2 years old) has stayed inside. I"m a new chicken owner and don't really know if this is cause for alarm or not. She looks normal to me. Her feathers look normal. I don't...

    Feeding hens steak

The steak has been cooked and salted. I know that salt isn't good for hens. Is there a way to desalt it enough so that it's OK for them to eat? If I soak it in hot water, will that work? Thanks in advance. Kevin

Finding a home for my girls

HI y'all. I currently have 1 hen that's 18 months old and 3 chicks (hopefully females) that are only a week old. I may have to get rid of them but I don't know how to look for places that will take them. I live in the SF Bay Area. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks.

    Very Sick Chick

We just got four baby chicks. We've had them 5 days, so I guess they are 7-8 days old. One of them is sick. The place where we bought them vaccinated them, though I didn't think to ask for what. We are feeding them medicated feed. Yesterday the sick chick stopped running as much as the others...

    4' fence...what can we do?

I live in a city so our chickens have very limited space. They have maybe a 22' by 22' place where they stay. We also were letting them into the back yard out of that area, but we didn't have a fence and they were destroying part of the garden and even getting onto the sidewalk. So we built a...

    Heat Lamp vs Heating Plate

Hi y'all. We just got 4 new chicks. They are soooo cute. :) We used a heat lamp before but a friend of mine just suggested a heating plate. It seems much better (less electricity, no fire risk, mimics the mother's heating). Are there any down sides to heating plates? Thanks. Kevin

House cats as predators (details are a little gruesome)

HI y'all. We recently lost a hen to a predator. When we found her, she didn't have a head, and there were feathers all around, but whatever killed her didn't eat her. That leaves me to believe that it wasn't a wild animal. We do have raccoons and opossums, and I guess it could have been a...

My chicken ate a very very very narrow piece of plastic.

I was gardening and my chickens were with me and I saw one eat a very very thin piece of plastic maybe 2-3 inches long. It was like the width of a piece of grass root, which is I guess what she mistook it for. I couldn't stop her. Will she die from this? Kevin

    losing neck feathers

Hi. I just noticed that one of our hens is losing her feathers under and around her neck. I'm trying to figure out why this is happening and what to do about it. She is about a year old and she is reddish brown with black tipped wings (I'm sorry that I don't know the names for the types of...

    Hi y'all

I just wanted to say hi. I'm a new chicken owner. I live in the SF Bay Area. My husband grew up with chickens but it was more of a farm situation. They ate them after they stopped laying eggs. I'm vegetarian and our chickens now are for eggs and just to have as pets. We started out with four...
