This is Piggy, she is my EE hen. I thought she was a true Ameraucana until I joined this site, thanks to all the helpful people and Illia breaking down the breed for me I know understand [somewhat] the difference and that my hen is NOT a pure bird. She is pretty though, and spoiled rotten. She...
Kate's Cacklin' Ranch
Howdy from Texas! Let me do a bit of introducing...
I have, at current, 40 Claret chickens. They are a game bird breed, and are wild as the day is long. Very few I can actually handle, and those are because they were raised in the house. Baldy, she's our top producing hen...
I got some eggs from my brother and of the two that hatched, they both hatched upside down with bent necks. My daughter calls it Rye neck What can I do?
She will be greatly missed. For an old lady, she was a great laugh. She would try to chase bugs, but ole' arther said otherwise. Sir would bring her bugs and they spent every moment together. He was her watch dog. Sir was raising cane yesterday, so I went to check on them. That's when we knew...
After several months of battling every mite and disease she could catch.
After several years of cruel confinement and mis treatment.
After being rescued.
After showing her beautiful personality.
After being the smallest hen I had.
Ginger passed away in her sleep last night.
She was a Golden...

Brown Butt Black Head???
yeah... Her entire body is a shade of brown, her chest and hackles are a lighter shade with darker speckles sort of... Again, I really don't have pictures she's not mine but I'm urious about her. She was a heavy weight bird, looked at least 6 lbs or better.
I saw the prettiest little hen today and I can't figure out what she was. It's driving me crazy. I've gone through several breed indexes and am beginning to believe she was a cross.
She had a brown/black head, buff hackles, brown speckles on her chest and back leading into a brown butt... I may...
I had a power outage here two nights ago, too. When I realized it wasn't coming back on, I ran out and started rotating eggs between my hens. My eggs spent the night under my most trusted brooders and went back in the 'bator today. I still haven't candled, but I need to. Need to candle all my...
Leg bands leg bands leg bands. My claret hens are VERY difficult to tell apart. They're all really similar. Baldy, and one of her daughters (29) have bald heads. No feathers from the comb to the top of the neck. I also use different colors to mark what rooster the hens come out of... Staples, I...

I normally don't use those two closest to the turner, but I'm going to test them out and see if those eggs hatch normally and see how it affects my bator. So far, everything is doing fine.
Two of my broody hens hatched out a chick a piece, and ate the rest of the ones that hatched from...
Hatch rates are 100% on my clarets. Never had a bad egg or quitter. My laying birds aren't as hardy, get 85-90 out of them. I won't set eggs from stock that has trouble making it out. Those get sold, for the most part... I crossed an EE roo over some of my spangled clarets, can't wait to see...

I would rather get my type back in a few of my newer clarets and a couple of my other birds first. Then MAYBE... Mainly just sell my culls, though.
I feel ya'lls pain. In one of my claret coops, ALL TEN hens are sitting. Four from another with chicks... Three trying to sit. Hopefully it doesn't turn into lat year where I had 20 sit within 4 weeks of each other.
Last year I had 20 hens total sit on me at once. Within four weeks of each other... And of course they all got chicks! Ten each. Down to a culled flock, though, having a rough year getting the comb type back in my clarets.
Also, I have some silkie cross hens in the layer coop acting like they...

I wish I had A broody hen. But no, I have nine at the moment with four acting like they want to sit. That doesn't include the three currently on chicks. My clarets are very productive sitters if you want one. XD
