    Goat appears to be sick/weak

Thank you for all the helpful tips! However, I don't think just putting baking soda on her feed will do her much good, since she has zero interest in eating anything- although she did thankfully eat a small handful of hay this morning. I'll see to getting an actually good goat syringe (the only...

    Goat appears to be sick/weak

To sum this up, quickly: She was a bit lethargic, but improved today and has moved around more- never far into the pasture though. She may or may not have vomited, but I strongly believe she didn't since the only evidence I had was a wet/dirty jaw and mouth. She wasn't very vocal, but also...

    the end of day 21

I did, thank you! 3 of the eggs hatched out of the 5 that turned out fertile, which i'll happily take. they're 2 weeks old today, and are very lively- which i believe is just a common thing for baby easter eggers!!

    6 days old!

only 3 of the eight eggs ended up hatching, but that's alright by me. the 2 eggs that haven't hatched i assume will not hatch at all. not sure what happened to them, but, they haven't even pipped. however, the 3 that did are now 6 days old, and they're all so sweet! to me, at least. they really...

    heated room for a brooder?

oh! whoops, sorry. didnt know those were considered old school! those are the ones im pretty used to here. we should have some laying around, unless we've magically run out. do those give off enough heat for a brooder?

    heated room for a brooder?

I dont think we do. I dont even think I know what an 'old school' light bulb would look like, unless they look the same- would those give off enough heat??

    heated room for a brooder?

my dad got the wrong kind of bulb for our heat lamp. he got a red LED bulb, which clearly does not give off any useful amount of heat whatsoever. let me make it clear that i do not agree with using a heater at all. i would much rather have a heat lamp for them, the idea of a heater- a regular...

chick doesnt seem to want to hatch- should i worry?

oh, definitely!! ive always had the hens to worry about the chicks hatching, now I'm the one having to worry for them. no wonder they decided to stop going broody!! i still have two eggs who havent even pipped yet, and these three still stuck in the incubator until my dad gets back with an...

chick doesnt seem to want to hatch- should i worry?

thought I should get this info out here right away- the chick can definitely breathe. its beak has poked out many times and it has chirped and wiggled a few times. so, its alive. im not sure if its stuck, or just resting. it's two siblings, Mori and the drowsiest chick I've ever met, had a...

    the end of day 21

yesterday i said that i had hoped for some pips this morning. well, all that hoping did something! at 8am this morning, i woke up to 2 pips- one in the egg i had been suspicious of from the start, and a light blue egg. later that day, another pipped! 3 pips in one day, on exactly day 21. i...

    update on my first batch!

of course!! everyone wants to see them everywhere else, it would be weird not to show them here! as a bit of an update, this morning, 2 have already pipped, and after a little bit of whistling i heard some little chirps!!

    update on my first batch!

i forget if i've mentioned, i probably have, but out of the initial 8 eggs- 5 turned out to be fertile. and as far as i'm concerned, all are doing great! today is day 20! from what i've heard, today they should've internally pipped, though i haven't checked. i might do that in a few minutes...

what do you guys do with infertile eggs?

ha, i dont think my parents would enjoy a stink bomb very much! i ended up doing what my dad told me, and just tossing them into the woods, although i still didn't like it. i'm sure with time it wont bother me as much- after all this is the first batch i've incubated. at least i still have...

what do you guys do with infertile eggs?

tomorrow will mark day 14 of incubating, and i'm happy to announce that out of the 8 eggs, 5 of them have developed so far!! 3, however, seem to be infertile. upon asking my dad the other day, he said we will just toss the infertile eggs out into the woods. now i know there aren't any chicks in...

practically day 2- humidity.. may have been too high

that's reassuring, thank you!! i just removed all the water in the incubator, and after further investigation, realized that all the former humidity had stuck to the mat at the bottom of the incubator, and some water was also pooling underneath it because of that. without the mat the eggs...

practically day 2- humidity.. may have been too high

my dad woke me up this morning at 7am and gave me an independent thermometer/hydrometer. not the most thrilling thing to be woken up for, but, it meant i could finally check the humidity in the incubator, and to see if the temperature is right. well, i did put it in the incubator. temperature...

    before i mess up

oh!! whoops-- thank you!! i'll be sure to do that the next time we incubate. i believe it was only 1-2 eggs that were actually sweating, and even then i've definitely been washing my hands before i handle them because i don't wanna risk anything.

    before i mess up

that's a little more reassuring! i added two more marks to their sides and i'll just rotate them one side per hour until i go to sleep tonight, so i guess that is the route i'm taking for now. thankfully the temperature seems to be pretty constant, it only drops when i have to take the top off...
