Rooster amorous - hens close to laying?

So I have two roosters, a RIR and an EE. Both have begun crowing this past week. All our chickens are from the same hatchery and the same age (just about 20 weeks). Our red starts are all getting red combs and wattles and we've caught the roosters each trying to climb up on them - all be it...

If you order from azure standard I have a ? for you

I'm shocked at this! My husband and I are self employed. We deliver Azure orders into areas that Azure does not service. We add 5% of the orders as our shipping and handling fee (with a minimum of $7.00) however we use a 20 foot rerigerated diesel delivery truck to do this. We have several...

When can I clip their wings?

My chicken needs to be grounded! I have one hen in particular who insists on flying out of the run. She's a silly little hen - as soon as she flies out she peeps and squaks to get back in, but can't figure out her escape route in reverse. She's a barred rock, 12 weeks old and I'd like to clip...

Will DE harm the "good guys" in compost?

I've been using DE sprinkled in my coop to help keep the flies down and the other little critters at bay. My question is, when I clean the coop, is the DE that's mixxed in going to be harmful to the composting good buggies and bacteria? Or if I let it compost in a future garden area is it...

Very naive Australorp question, yellow feet?

Quote: Do you think they'd still be the same size at 10 weeks? Our yellow-footed pullet is no bigger than all the others and, outside of the yellow, there seems to be no distinguishing differences. Admittedly, I'm a total novice with no experience at all in raising chickens, so I'm not sure...

Very naive Australorp question, yellow feet?

I have 13 Australorp pullets that are 10 weeks old. They all arrived together in an order from Murray McMurray hatchery. They all look the same EXCEPT that I have one with some yellowing on the beak and yellowing around the eyes. The bottoms of her feet are VERY yellow, I mean a bright...

7 week old hen, feather picking turned bad, what next?

I have a bad case of feather plucking going on and it's leaving my Austrolorps vulnerable to attack. For whatever reason they are the ones that are suffering the blunt of the plucking. I have isolated those that are injured, cleaned the wounds and applies an herbal healing spray. One is still...

all purpose or construction sand for grit?

I am feeding organic commercial feed - it is crumbles. But I was under the impression that if you feed ANY other feed beyond the commercial feed that we'd have to add grit. BOSS, egg, veggie pieces, yogurt, etc, don't these all need grit even if given in small amounts?

all purpose or construction sand for grit?

the chick grit at the feed store only comes in tiny little bags, I'd rather not buy more. I'm hoping to only need grit for another month or so (chicks are 6 weeks) just waiting until they're a little bigger to allow them freedom to range (overhead birds worry me). Until they can get out on the...

At what age would we see Austrolorp combs and wattles?

Sorry, they are 6 weeks today. My RIR really started looking ROOish just in the past few days. Just wondering if Australorps would present this early or if I have to keep watching for a while.

My favorite RIR is a roo, a little bummed.

Tuna, Really? Great! I'll put it on my shopping list! I'm glad to know yours aren't mean - I only had the one point of reference and crazy mean was an understatement! You've encouraged me!

My favorite RIR is a roo, a little bummed.

My parents had a flock of RIRs when I was a kid. The few roosters that I remember were mean, Mean, MEAN!! I can remember being chased by them - one in particular would chase me onto the hood of our old station wagon until my mom would come out with a broom and rescue me. So when I ordered...

At what age would we see Austrolorp combs and wattles?

I have a RIR roo that just made us aware of his manliness lately. His comb is double to triple the size of the other RIRs and is distinctly red, and has wattles are developing. None of the other RIRs have any of these signs. Also from the same hatchery shipment I have 14 Australorps who all...

    grinding corn

I like my Nutrimill for home use. It grinds corn into fairly coarse cornmeal and I get a great soft pastry flour from my soft white wheat. It doesn't crack grains though, so I'm not sure how well it will work for feed - not sure how course you're looking to go. HTH Debbi

Waterer suggestions please, I hate my Little Giant waterer.

yes, it's the plastic octogaon one. I just went down to check the gasket and it's definately at the top. I tried shimming the side opposite the little spout like the PP had mentioned - didn't work. I let the cap off and it still trickled until it flowed over the rim. I'll try a little olive...

Waterer suggestions please, I hate my Little Giant waterer.

Quote: REALLY??!! WOW!!!! Please tell/show me how you did that! I really like the idea of a nipple waterer but it seemed like more work for me to get it all figured out. If I can add the nipples to my existing waterer that would be GREAT!!!!

Waterer suggestions please, I hate my Little Giant waterer.

I'll have to check the rubber ring, I'm assuming it's in the right place, but then again, how would I know? It's not on the lid, it's on the neck of the waterer. It's where it was when I pulled the cap off the first time. Frustrating. At this point I'd rather go with one of the metal ones...

Waterer suggestions please, I hate my Little Giant waterer.

Last week I bought a Little Giant feeder (22# capacity) and a Little Giant waterer (5 gal capacity). I really like the feeder but so far the waterer sucks!!! I don't know if it's defective or what but I take the little cap thingy off and it slowly starts to flow into the bottom like it should...

    Feeder price check

I just bought a Little Giant feeder - 22# capacity. We've only used it a week but I really like it so far. I paid $29.95 new from the feed store. Perhaps that gives you a point of reference.
