When can I merge my flocks together?

I have four, 11 month old hens, 18 that are 9 weeks old and another 6 that are 5 weeks old. When will it be safe to put the 6 week olds in with the 9 week olds? The brooder is getting smaller and smaller by the day and I have no other place to put them. And what's the best way to bring them...

    New chicks from TSC today

I REALLY want some EE's and was sort of disappointed when they didn't have any. But now that I bought these 6 I'm afraid I don't have anymore room for them. Guess I'll have to sweet talk DH into another coop Think it'll work????

I should have been warned!!! New Chicks

Quote: First, welcome to BYC Second, since I'm originally from the Lehigh Valley, I can understand why chick days may be a bit later there than elsewhere. If I stilled lived in the area I would personally wait until at least the end of March before having chicks mail ordered. Why risk the...

    Chicken Wire

Quote: We have the same problem here in TX. Couldn't bury the wire to save our lives; too much rock We just bent it out about 12 - 18" and then covered it with dirt. So far no critters and I'm not constantly catching my boots on the wire since it's covered. Good luck and keep us posted...

    How many nest boxes???

Welcome CJ I'm most certainly not the expert here, but from my experience 1 nesting box to every 5 hens is plenty. My first coop had two boxes and 5 hens. To this day they've never used the one nesting box 4 sq feet per bird is the average, so 10 x 12 should be sufficient for 25. Good...

    Anyone setup something like this..........

Wish I would have this article 10 weeks ago. Sure would have killed 2 birds with 1 stone and made building the new coop and run alot easier.

Ten weekends, but it's finally done!

Thanks for all the compliments. The coop is actually 8 x 8. I gave the floor 3 coats of porch/floor paint to seal it and make it a little easier to clean. It was cheaper than linoleum. I'm actually hoping to use a small step into the coop instead of a ramp, but I'll have to wait and see how...

COMMUNITY PROJECT: Let's Design The Perfect Coop!!!

If you're looking for something compact, inexpensive, secure from critters/pedators and could be made portable this may be worth considering. Nesting boxes were added to the end with it's own separate door. This housed my 5 Production Reds very comfortably.
