When I was in the UK recently I saw some 'pink oil' for sale and asked about it- apparently it is the final dressing on feathers after bird is washed for show. It's supposed to keep dust off the feathers. How do you wash and prep for show?
Some of you will remember me mentioning a silver tabby who was abandoned at our farm. Well, I've entered Balsam in a photo contest to win some money for the local SPCA, to acquire funds for a TNR program in our area. If you agree, please vote for her here...
I have 12 sexlinks hatched May 2008. They're finishing a slow moult, and I've had 2 with egg production probs, 1 eggbound and one with softies. I've boosted nutrition with extra calcium and multivitamins, but I'm wondering what your experience has been with eggs in sexlinks 2 and older...
I've bought an Allied brand heated pet bowl as shown here-
http://www.alliedprecision.com/petbowl.html
It replaces one from Farm Innovators which was more expensive and which failed after one winter but just after the warranty expired.
I hope I have made the right choice, the Allied bowl is...
This topic began in a coop construction thread, but I thought it merited some discussion in this section.
Water *is* collected from the roof for humans and livestock, but there are issues surrounding contaminants.
Good article concerning roof water in New Zealand...
Has anyone tried that scuba diving cream that divers apply to face and fingers when diving? I know it's silicon based and we found it very effective in North Atlantic diving all year round. Just wondering if it would work, maybe better than bag balm or vaseline?????
My cold and your cold....your humidity and mine...there have been many posts lately about preparing for winter and those of us in the north can really *explain* how to deal with that.
Heh.
Sometimes we see posts and they show what is really a 'summer coop' to us, and then we find out the...
This is what we did using scrap wood and an old sheet of scratched plexiglass screwed to a frame made from strapping. Added another frame with hardware cloth on the inside:
The pop door you see is double-latched and has two pieces, once on the outside and then on the inside so that if...
One medium sized pumpkin will entertain 12 hens for 6 days. Well worth having a garden:
and they're far quieter when they have one, might be good if you have a noisy hen or two...

Since there have been some questions lately, I thought some of you might want to bookmark the Cornell site for information on toxic plants. I find it detailed and more useful than most, because the exact poisons are listed.

Would love to see pics of reinforced runs, realizing that keeping out a bear is a real challenge but knowing many of you have ideas for keeping out the common rascals.
I'll start
This is how we built it:

These are excellent- contain dichlorovos. Along with dry bedding, food-grade DE and Stable Boy powder, I use these in barn/coop, and have for 22 years.
Avoid hanging over food/water and keep away from birds, you can encase in hardware cloth if necessary.
Various generic brands sold through...
I witnessed an exquisite display yesterday on our roosts, which are 3- 2x4's at the same level. A small sexlink named Redwing flew to the roost from the top of the nest boxes last evening as all the girls prepared to groom and gossip before sleep. Trouble was, the biggest bossiest hen in the...
