    Injured hen?

Thanks for the reply. Her legs feel fine, temperature wise. One foot would grip, the other would not, No bruises that I could see, and everything feels normal as far as I can tell. She does smell pretty bad underneath, but then I'm not usually inspecting her so closely. She generally is alright...

    Injured hen?

Hello all. I have 4 hens. One, a black sexlink, seems to be injured. 3 days ago, she was absolutely fine. The next day, I noticed she hadn't come out into the open pen, so I looked for her inside the shelter. She was sitting on the ground. She can't seem to stand. This has not changed since...

I want winter egg laying to slow down.

But it's not happening. They are getting no extra light, and not even any extra warmth so far. Is it true that if they lay through the whole winter, they will probably only live a year or so? We love the eggs they give us, but these are pets more than anything, and so we'd like them to be...

    Corn

Hi, I bought a 25 kilo bag of whole "round" corn yesterday. Winter is quickly coming upon us, and I was wondering how much I should give them? Should it be mixed with their regular "layer" food, or be given seperately? Anything else I should know about corn feeding? Thanks.

    Leghorn hen with swollen footpad.

She seems otherwise alright, eats as always, good energy. I checked her foot out as best I could. The pad is swollen, but that's all I can see. No wound, redness, rash or peeling, etc. It is simply just swollen compared to her other foot. I first noticed it yesterday, and it seemed to cause...

    Are these eggs normal?

My husband and I have been debating this for weeks. Amongst our flock are two Deckal-B sexlinks hens. One of them tends to lay egg as shown below. My husband believes the spots are caused by blood getting into the shell, as in she has something wrong with her. I think these spots are just a...

Formerly eggbound hen has stopped laying eggs altogether

She was a 20 week old hen in April, so that makes her about 7-8 months old now? If what you said were true, shouldn't she be suffering again? It would have been 5 days since she laid that last egg. And she's acting right as rain today. She's never been a consistent producer, but I think this...

Formerly eggbound hen has stopped laying eggs altogether

Last week, one of my hens was eggbound for 3-4 days. She finally laid her egg, which looked like someone had eaten it, and then thrown it back up. (yuck!) Since then, she hasn't laid anymore eggs. This isn't a problem for me as I'll just keep her as a pet. But I don't know what to be expecting...

    Sick Layer, egg binding?

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner. I didn't get an email telling me someone had responded. Thanks for the information. I'll keep it handy. My chicken finally passed the egg about 1/2 hour after writing this post, and she slowly started getting better. Today she seems perfectly well.

    Sick Layer, egg binding?

I'm a first time chicken owner. I received 4 20-week old hens in April. For the most part, they seem well and happy, and produce plenty of eggs. For the last couple of days, "Black", a sexlinks, has been acting strangely. We let them all roam for a time each day, and she's not very active like...

    Simple question

Thank you for the replies. I was just wondering because I have an area that really piles up the clippings too much when I mow the lawn. No chance letting the birds out at this time. I couldn't afford the amount of gating I'd need for our property.

    Simple question

Is it ok to use grass clippings in an outdoor pen, as food or bedding? Thanks.

    Chicken dance

Quote: Ya, even before we found this out, my husband suggested I try touching them or picking them up when they did that, to see if they would let me. Well, I guess when you're hot, you're hot! lol

    Chicken dance

Um...crap! lol What did I do to deserve this kind of attention? I'm a woman, and I'm married for Heaven's sake! lol

    Chicken dance

I'm guessing this question must get asked often enough. I got 4 chickens last week. 1 leghorn, 1 red sexlinks, and 2 black sexlinks. The blacks seem to have become quite used to us, perhaps even liking us at this point. When I go into the pen to feed them or water them or whatever, the blacks...

Would like confirmation on the hen's I just got.

I just received my flock of four hens this afternoon from my local co-op. I'm having trouble finding information on the net about them, so I'd like to ask you to confirm or not their ID's. http://www.geocities.com/drosera9/Black.jpg http://www.geocities.com/drosera9/nsb.jpg These are my 2...

    Chick Language

So I'm raising my two week old possible RIR all by herself. I've been noticing she responds differently to some vocalizatiosn I make. If I burp, she drops, freezes, and stays silent till I tell her everything is ok. If I talk nice and happy, obviously she walks about and chirps contentedly. Now...

Is getting feathers itchy to chicks?

Oh ya, growing feathers are itchy to the young birds. I've previously raised a house sparrow which I got as a naked nestling, and am currently raising a possibly 2 week old RIR. The sparrow almost looked like he was going mad from the itchies when his feathers grew out. As well, they tend to...

    Deckal-B chickens

No I can't. I don't have them yet, and they didn't have any pictures at the co-op. I guess I'll just wait until I get them and post pics. I just thought there might be someone who might already know about this Deckal-B stuff. Thanks for responding.

Can a single chick be successfully reared?

Thanks for your advice everyone. Since yesterday afternoon, she seems very much improved. She eats like a pig, cheeps all day, scratches, naps, etc. The only problem I see now is that I'm apparently not allowed to leave the room! She goes into frantic loud cheeping noise whenever she doesn't...
