Do young hens raise their hackles?

Good morning. I have a group of 6 week old chicks that I picked up from someone in the area. They are mixed breeds and I am unsure of sexes at this point. This morning I noticed a few of the chicks sparring..jumping up and down facing each other. I noticed a few of them were raising their...

    Red Star Rooster or Hen

I think it is a hen. From what I understand, Red Star roosters can be sexed at birth by their coloring. I forget what it is called, but that was the case when I had a Red Star rooster. Much bigger and almost all white. Good luck. Love their eggs!

How long are layed eggs good for?

Found 10 eggs in the woods. Assuming an egg a day, that makes the oldest one 10 days old. If looking to eat them, how long are eggs good for? I thought I read somewhere about 12 days. Thanks,

First Egg at 7pm - How to schedule?

We found our first "real" egg last night around 7pm. I knew they were ready as there had been a few weak eggs a week earlier. I thought they might be laying in the bushes, but I could never find anything. From the suggestion of another member, I "locked" them in their coop for 24+ hours and...

    Our first (and only) coop

Our first coop. Newbie here. We have 6 chicks. The floor space measures 6 feet x 3 feet, including 3 nesting boxes on the floor. I know too tight for continuous confinement, but our hens free range on two acres. Built the coop in the garage in the winter, moved it outside in April. Plant...

    Ok straw or shavings?

Newbie here....I use a combination of pine shavings as many have suggested along with shredded cardboard. When I first received my chicks, I was also using shredded paper...whoops! They decided to eat some of the paper so I stopped doing that. I shred the cardboard using a standard paper...
