Ok, so about a month ago we inherited a flock of 12 chickens - 10 hens, 2 roos. The roosters seemed to be fine together. One was definitely the alpha rooster but he tolerated the other rooster being around and didn't seem to mind him. I came home one day and found the alpha rooster pretty beat...
A week or so ago, we adopted 12 young chickens (2 roos, 10 hens) from a friend who had a lot of chickens and we suspect were overcrowded from their feather conditions (bare backs, some bare necks, no lice or mites). Well, one of my black sex links has hung out in a nesting box almost constantly...
I have one that is doing the same thing. I check every day to see if there is an egg under her and there isn't, but boy when I move her, she squawks up a storm letting me know I've "disturbed" her!
Thanks everybody!
I've noticed the speckled rooster has some black on his comb. I've checked the chickens for mites, lice, etc. and haven't found any. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Our coop burned down last winter and we lost all our chickens however, we moved this summer and our new place had an already-built chicken coop and run! A friend of ours recently gave us 12 chickens to start our flock over. I think he had some overcrowding going on because many of the hens had...
Thank you! My husband just called and said his friend, who is a carpenter, offered to come out to our house this week and rebuild the coop. His dad raises chickens too and he said he has 7 I can have to replace the ones I lost! Chicken people are good people!
Thanks everyone. I can't believe how much I miss them! We have definitely learned from this and will use this opportunity to make revisions on our next coop.
I wish I would have read your post sooner. I am sooo sorry for your loss.
I woke up yesterday morning to the same awful tragedy. One of the lamps must have fell and ignited the bedding. Our flock of 7 is gone and the coop was a total loss. Nothing but ashes. We were fortunate too that it was...
I did the same thing - coop over the winter and now they have been free ranging this spring. I've had the same problem lately - found 12 eggs in the barn under some plywood last week. I placed artificial eggs back in their nesting boxes to kind of "retrain" their minds. I had had no eggs in the...
My dog was chasing our rooster around this weekend and backed him into a corner and darned if the rooster didn't play dead too. I thought my dog had killed him and I called the dog out of the barn. The rooster was just sitting there in the corner with his head down and butt up in the air. I was...

Well, every now and then, I'll find an egg in the corner of the coop but otherwise, they're always in the nest. Even when they go out to free range, the ggirls always go back to the coop and lay their eggs.
I've also noticed how much brighter the yolks are since letting them out to...
I work outside the home three days a week and on those days, the chickens don't get out of their run to free range. They were in their coop/run all winter and were laying at almost 100% even through the cold cold spells of -20 below with a lamp on.
Well, now that spring is here I let them out...
I'm so glad you posted this thread!
My rooster has started "enamoring" the hens lately but I have to say, it is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen! LOL I feel so bad for the hen because he grabs her by the back of the neck and holds her down like that while he does his...
I found this story in our local newspaper - now they're arresting chickens!!
