    Predator killed Silkie

Well, I caught something in the trap but it wasn't what I expected. A pretty young orange tabby cat. I moved the cage to the shaded porch and put some water and food in there with her and I'm going to make sure she's doesn't belong to the neighbors before taking her to the humane society...

    Predator killed Silkie

Ok, I won't worry about looking for another rooster then, thanks. Chickens are going to be kept inside today with a fan and a couple gallons of water. I checked the flour I spread around the coop last night and there weren't any prints, but whatever it is might come in the day again so I'll...

    Predator killed Silkie

Whatever it was I think it was small, there's a fenced enclosure around the coop (but big enough that the chickens walk through it, leftover from when the previous owner had dogs) and I found my poor silkie in a corner closest to the woods and it looked like perhaps it couldn't get it through...

    Predator killed Silkie

Just found the headless body of one of my silkies. They are free range (about a month and a half now) and this is the first one I lost to predators. It happened during the day and I suspect the Silkie was a male, although I can't quite tell yet, so I don't know if that has something to do with...

Rogue chicken fled into woods at night

I looked all over this morning and again right before I left for work (imagine my surprise when my boss told me I had a bush in my hair; apparently I got into some brambles and didn't realize it) and turned up nothing. However, I just checked after getting home from work and heard this little...

Rogue chicken fled into woods at night

Do I have any hope I'll find her alive in the morning? I was rounding up the chickens to go back inside and had two of my bantams (silkie and a d'uccle) run off into the woods at the side of the area they free range. I was able to locate one when she went up to roost (the d'uccle) and was able...

    Siding for Coops

Thanks for the additional ideas. Here's a pic of what I'm working with (I can finally post them, yay!) in case that changes the opinions. Thanks!

Can someone help me sex my bantams?

Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks for the confirmation on the Mille Fleur Nicole :-)

Can someone help me sex my bantams?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I'm trying to figure out how many roosters I have (my profile pic is definitely a rooster I found out by the crowing yesterday). Thanks! This is the silkie of indeterminate parentage....possibly a cross between a blue and a white? This one has...

    indoor house chickens

Too cute. I'm not sure if anyone else saw this, but the latest edition of the Mary Jane's Farm magazine had an article about house chickens and even a how-to on how to make diapers for them. I have to admit I was intrigued but there's no way the fiance would ever let me do that :-)

    Siding for Coops

Anyone have a suggestion on good cheap siding for a coop? We definitely need it as there are small gaps between panels but I don't want to break the bank either (the initial body cost more than expected, but the chickens are worth it). I was thinking adobe siding, has anyone tried that before?

Do people look at you weird when you say you have pet chickens?

I get it a little. I now have the nickname "Farmer Girl" at work and when introduced to other people in the company its always mentioned. I think a lot of people view it as a novelty.

    Help! Chicken emergency!

Thanks everyone....I went out and got some of the polyvisol and I'm going to make her a batch of scrambled eggs just for a little extra oomph. She seems to be doing a lot better than she was this morning and I put one of my mille fleur's in with her to keep her company.

    Help! Chicken emergency!

It does kind of look like that but maybe a little worse. If you're looking down on her (she can still walk around) you can't even see her neck and head its so tucked under her body. And when you look at it her head itself is a little twisted to the side. I'm still being passed around on the...

    Help! Chicken emergency!

I'm on the phone with the vet but there aren't many chicken specialists available on a Sunday. I was cleaning their brooder today and noticed one of them was acting weird when I went to put her back in it. I don't know if her neck is broken or if she's having some kind of neurological problem...
