Our coop has an automatic door for the winter and I am thinking about putting another one in the run so that they can go out and free range every day. I would like to rig up some sort of confirmation light so that we can look out in the dark and know that the door has closed. Any ideas , or has...
I guess I'm looking for advice on how to handle this. We have had chickens for five years. Our neighbor used to have chickens, but no longer, now has a new dog. It's more or less a black lab however the dog is psycho and probably a puppy farm frankenstein. It barks incessantly when put out on a...
My wife, Nikki, flicked one off a leave and got the immediate attention of our flock. The beetles got gobbled up rapid fire and didn't have a chance. Beatles are the new treat !
We have been turned down by several insurance companies because of our chickens. Amazing! I am insuring 2 houses with a huge umbrella policy. When the line of questions comes to pets and I say 2 cats and 17 chickens, That's it. I get "Sorry, that's farming and we don't insure farms." I can't...
We got our latest ten chicks sixteen days ago. Unfortunately one has a crooked beek and one has a prolapsed vent. We did the research and still are not sure what to expect. We have been treating the vent with Preparation H and are not yet seeing results. Any advice?
Thanks

Today the girls went on a major chicken adventure and wandered off further than they ever had before. I'm curious, Do they have navigation? Can they always find their way back to the coop at sunset?
A few of our neighbors have chickens. To them, they are just animals. They have no names and they get no attention and no treats.
We, on the other hand, have eighteen. They all have names. We raised most of them since they were chicks and know the personalities of each. We like to talk to them...
Our littlest ones are almost three months (Redstars). Size wize they are nearly as big as the adults. We are concerned that their feathers are not fully ready to insulate. Should we opt for some supplemental heat in the coop until they get bigger?
Our Maran rooster was super friendly as a chick, always the first to jump up and wanting to be picked up. Now, in adolescence, he's still very friendly but gets urges to bite and hang on for a couple seconds. When I get him to knock it off he's friendly again. It usually takes a tap with a...
Our 15 year old son, the Chief Herder, discovered the virtues of the herding stick. We let the girls out to free range almost daily. Using the stick has made the round up extremely easy to control the direction and movement of our flock. During "Share the Run With The Little Ones" time, keeping...
We have some antibiotic chick feed that was given to us. It has pantry moths in it, so we want to get rid of it. Can we feed this to our laying hens. Any problems for the eggs?
Thanks

Thought you might like some pics. They are Marans, Silkies and RI Whites.
We have no idea what type the brown one "Tiger" is with the pattern in the feathers is. We got them from a breeder. Intending to just get a couple, we came home with ten.
My neighbor planted a garden this year using compost from his coop. I helped him with my tractor and couldn't miss the richness.
Now we are starting to see results and they are amazing. This stuff is like rocket fuel for a vegtable garden.
Some time ago, I posted pics of our new coop and was asked how I did the run. Sorry it took so long.
The hardware cloth was painted black and I put a shade screen over the top hardware cloth (ebay).
The run is 8'x15'. The box area of the run is 8'x12' and there is about another 3' where it...
We got our hens about four days ago from a friend of my wife who had a bunch. We never had chickens before. The girls are kind of afraid of people. Three will take bread from my hand but only very cautiously while the other two will not be hand fed at all. Our neighbors hens will just about mall...
The girls like it. Enjoy.
Security was a big concern, so we went down 30" with the hardware cloth all the way around as well as layering the cloth scraps while backfilling. The nest boxes slide out and the floor is covered with truck bed liner. This week a solar powered door, light and motion...
Today I made up a broom on a loooong 10' fiberglass pole to depoop the coop. The idea is that it can be swept right into the wheelbarrow (the coop door is about waist high).
I'm curious to see what other inovations are used for the never ending supply of poop.

I have a solar Add-A-Motor rig (motor, battery, timer, solar panel) headed towards me on the UPS truck. Just curious if there are any tips on the install or setting up the 12 volt timer. I also found a cool indoor / outdoor 12v LED light fixture that will be incorporated.
Thanks
