I am thinking of trying to raise some additional types if birds to assist in my bird dog training. Can I raise different types of birds alongside my chickens???
Went out late this morning to give the my 5 pullets some scratch and I was pleasently suprised to find a nice little bown egg hanging out in the run!! I'm happy that I have my first egg but is there something wrong with my nest boxes??
UPDATE: Its now the next day and I found another egg in the...
I said a while ago that I would try and put some plans up (OP: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=580638 ).
Here they are:
Notes:
Part 1: This part you want to get in electrical PVC. That means that it will be grey and not white. This will just mean that the threads...
Well I moved my chicks out to their new coop on Sunday and I needed a bigger waterer than what they had in their brooder here is what I came up with...
Already had a problem with it the first night. Came outside to check on the chicks and one of the cups was overflowing so I needed to change...
So I'm going to make a 5 gallon bucket water system with water cups. Is everyone just using the standard ~1/4" diameter handle on the bucket as a hanger or are you using something different thats a little stronger. I'll have this hung in the coop so I definetely dont want the bucket to fall down...
So these are my 5 chicks. They are all approx. 35 days old. Recieved all from MPC. I believe that I've identified the breeds correctly by what I ordered as they are all so different.
First is a Speckled Sussex:
Second is a White Plymouth Rock:
Third is a Black Australorp: Worried that...
Just got fed up with my 4 week old pullets wasting so much food. Here is what I was using:
And here is what I came up with:
Rather I should say that this is what I came up with after seeing sooo many great designs from others.
It would really be great if we could get a feeder/waterer...
So I'm building an incubator for my Girlfriend's classroom. As a mechanical engineering student I enjoy making things complicated...
So i want to make this incubator affordable, accurate and automatic. This is my basic plan ( ) but I'm going to modify a few things.
Here is what I've decided...
After the initial 2 or 3 days my GF and I started holding the chicks about once a day. After a few days we found that the sometimes flighty chicks seemed very calm and sometimes fall asleep when you hold them on their backs. They stick their legs out and just lie back in the cup of your hand...
Here's what I'm thinking:
Going to add poop trays under both. and make them removable for easy cleaning.
Are there going to be issues with the hens not being able to get up to the roosts??? The near one is 39" off the floor and the one against the wall is 34.5 inches off the floor. Also the...
Well I have chicks due in 2 weeks so I figured I should get to work on my fedder. Here's what I whipped up with a few borrowed ideas from different places. Seems to hold feed well and not overflow.
Only concern is that perhaps the lip will be too high for baby chicks and I'll need to add a...
So here is what I have:
For whatever reason I cant find any PVC fittings that will screw into the black threaded (male) portion of the cup waterer. Is it my best bet to drill a hole in the pvc and glue it in??? Seems to me that would leak.
Suggestions???
My first coop.
Coop Dims: 4'x6'
Run Dims: 12'x4' plus small 2'x4' (basically 56 sq ft)
Spent alot of time on the design but ended up just diving in as I was way over engineering it.
Still have lots to do, will post as I progress!!!
Thanks all for all of the great topics, posts, designs and...
Greetings from Seattle,
I've started designing my coop and would love some input from any and all willing to share their input!!!!
I made this as I had seen a few others do in googlesketch.
