The coons are AWFUL where my parents live. To keep them out of the trash people build large wooden box type things with lids you can lock. I would to that to keep them out of the feed.
To the OP--has the dog's owner reimbursed you yet? I really hope they do without having to go to court and I am so sorry for the loss of your chickens.
Yeah, no roosters--lol. It's not actually prohibited in town but I do want to be a good neighbor and don't want to make waves. Do hens tend to hang out more with birds of their own breed, or do they intermingle pretty well?
I have been looking over coop plans and noticed that they have space for more hens than they do nest boxes. For example, the plan will say that it houses 5 hens but allows for 1 or 2 nest boxes. Do hens need one box per bird or will they share?

ANY DOG, whether or not it has killed small critters WILL bite given the right situation. If it has teeth it bites, plain and simple-some dogs just have great thresholds than others. About a bazillion dogs that have never gone after a small animal in their lives have bitten children...
So I am trying to figure out what the right chicken breeds to start with would be. We live in town on about a quarter acre and have a 6 foot privacy fence. We are hoping to keep hens for eggs and pets, and are thinking of getting 4 of them to start with. I am drawn to the Plymouth Rocks and...

Sorry, but I just have to comment on this. Just because a dog kills small feathery or furry animals does not automatically mean the dog will begin to attack children. Even high prey drive dogs can tell the difference between chickens and children. I know a number of dogs that have...

First, your puppy was acquired TOO YOUNG. She missed important lessons from her littermates about bite inhibition, and etc. This can't be undone now, but is something to keep in mind. I would advise you to do an internet search on BITE INHBITION and read up on why teaching this is so...

I am very sorry about the whole situation. It is incredibly sad to lose that many chickens and incredibly sad for the dog--blame the owners, not the dog. I do hope that the dog's owners reimburse the OP.
That having been said, I'm glad I'm not the only one picking up on the "Good for you for...
Hi!
My name is Christina and I'm a 30 yr old "hen hopeful!" I live in a smallish town and am hoping to get my own backyard flock sometime in the next year. I'm kind of a compulsive researcher so figured I would make sure I have done all the homework I can do before bringing my new girls home...
