g'morning everyone. I am beat. Long night at work. I'm dreading the next week because I know it is going to be hotter 'n haides. I sure hope I don't loose any more birds. I wish I had some more shade here, but I'll have plenty of shade once we move. I just hope I don't loose any more birds...
Rosie I really like your new avatar picture! Yes, I was REALLY upset when I lost that pullet. I don't know if it was the heat or not. It wasn't that hot in the barn at the time. I sure hope I don't loose any more! She was in one of the larger pens on the ground, so I am really wondering if...
Rosie I really like your new avatar picture. Hey, believe me, I was really upset when I lost that pullet. I sure hope I don't loose any more! I don't know... I've lost several black birds in this heat. I don't have misters. She was in one of the larger pens, but a corner pen. It wasn't...
OMG! All the funny stories are a hoot! Love it!
Well, right now a little laughter is a good thing because I just lost one of my good rosecomb pullets. This pullet was of the same caliber as the one Checoukan just won grand champion with. I'm really bummed about it.
I've lost several...
This is a TRUE story.
My DH was working in the pet's department last night. There was a lady walking around, looking kind of lost.
DH, "May I help you?"
Lady shopper, "Do you have hampster balls?"
DH, "I BEG your PARDON?"
Lady burst into laughter and laughed until she had tears in...
Danz-Yes, I have some of the rosecombs. Originally, Checoukan got her rosecombs from me, but that was a number of years ago. She has since added more birds that she got from Rick Hare out of NY. They are awesome little birds. The ones I have now are hatched from Checoukan and Ricks birds.
We had a wild turkey hen with 7 poults in the back yard this morning. I love watching them run around. Those little poults could really fly well already. I'm pretty sure she nested just southwest of the house, which was probably a very safe place for her. Our dogs would have helped protect...
I think you could be correct that the one on the right is a pullet. The one on the left, with the dark beak may also be a pullet. In my black copper marans, my pullets often had very dark (blackish) combs and the color extended onto the beaks just like that one. I don't know if that is always...
Yes, I totally agree. I think perhaps your very best protection is a predator-proof coop. If you have poultry and nothing to protect them when they free range, you WILL loose birds to predators. Do right by your birds and provide them with safety and security. All it takes is one raccoon and...
Yes, I have read that the marremas are more people aggressive, too. Also, I think that hair would be a nightmare to take care of.
Well my little turkey that hatched under the broody hen died. I think the poor thing just stressed himself to death from being by himself. They didn't hatch any...
Hey Checoukan-I've got some boxes packed for you! It looks like DH, Ry and girlfiend and I will be down Aug. 5th. It depends on when Ry gets here, so that may change.. DH and Ry want to go to the demolition derby at Falls City on the 4th. Timing might not work out for the one down there...
GGGRRRRR! I just lost a long post. I don't know what key my stupid finger hit, but the whole thing is gone, and I don't have time to type another. Maybe I can catch up later.
Yes, silkies must be different. I admit, I've never had silkies. Yes, it is definitely an advantage to keep show birds out of the sun.
Danz-If you wash your birds several days ahead, you have to put them in a pen with fairly deep shavings and be sure to keep the cage or pen clean. They do...
OH, and Hawkeye-I'm not sure when your show is, but your birds should have SEVERAL days to preen and "poof" back up after a bath and before you show them.
Hawkeye-I agree. Try the blue stuff. I've never had to use it, so I can't tell you where to get it. The yellow on his feathers may be from the sun. It's hard to tell from the pics, but if it is just under his beak on the front of his neck it may be from the electrolyte water. What a bummer...
I am at Hiawatha, so you are less than an hour from me. That's only temporary, though, since I will be moving to Oswego, KS some time in September.
Welcome aboard.
Yep. You came to the right place.
Feel free to check in often and hop in anywhere you are comfortable. We are a pretty friendly group and many of us have gotten to know each other. Glad you are here.
HEChicken- Yes. Let them play! I think it will help her realize where she belongs and...
