The comb on the chicken on the left doesn't look like a true pea comb to me (in that picture). If it is a straight comb, it would be taller and redder. The pea combs are much smaller. Look at the rows of "peas" in an EE comb. 1 is usually female, 3 is usually male. USUALLY. Nothing is...

Not EE's, but last fall I had 2 heritage barred rock cockerels (about 7 months old) and a heritage speckled sussex cockerel in the same run. They tried to kill each other. There was blood everywhere. The ss tried to break up the fight and they both turned on him. They were scheduled...

Thanks Milliefleur! I'll update you all with pictures in a couple of weeks, I just needed to give the processing lady a number (I said five, but I guess we'll see), won't be done until middle of September when they're about 17 weeks, gotta get 'em done before the crowing...

I'd have edited this, but the editor is acting up. I had a white hen that looked much like your white bird at that age. Tall on her legs with an upright tail. I was pretty sure she was a cockerel, but she laid lovely bluegreen eggs for 5 years for me. Is there any reason besides the...
Same with Scout. She was a Campine, so she was pretty feisty, but she took a while to heal. I was able to put her back with the flock after a couple of weeks, but it took a fairly long time before she was nearly 100% She continued to limp a little when she was in a hurry the rest of her life...

Give her a little time. My head hen caught her leg on the cord on a bale of straw and her leg was dangling. I thought of culling her, but she was my favorite hen. I was on my way out of town for a week, so I put her in our portable coop, and my DH (who is a saint) hand fed her the week...

OK, the comb looks to be 3 rows, but that color is all girl. I would withhold judgment on this one for a little while. As an old joke (don't remember the joke, just the punchline) said, "It could go EITHER way."
There are pictures in this thread. Remember that it doesn't always work, though. Some males have single rows, some females have 3 rows. It is a usually sort of rule. Maybe 90% or more, but not always.
I can't answer about other breeds. Are there other breeds with pea combs? Try googling...
I have a friend on the consolidated Kansas thread who believes that weather may have something to do with gender, too. cooler weather, more girls. Not sure what I think.
