Just a heads up, Mr. Blosl started a fun new thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/818817/heritage-bantam-thread/ if anyone here might be interested. :-) I still can't make up my mind, myself...
Oooh. good info. I 've heard people using the gro-gel stuff, but that seems more practical. I know that USPS technically says "no food or water" but I think the intent is to not make a mess, and an apple/orange sure wouldn't.
I checked your profile, and maybe you've posted it before, but do...
Thank you. Someone else also said it can develop in old birds. Well, guessing mine are old, and all 3 hens are producing eggs... doesn't explain him though. If it can be caused by stress, well, they were rescues. Who knows what they were fed, how they were treated... I will take a much closer...
Ok, since no one else has asked, 'cause everyone else lurking knows their OEGB by heart, I guess - What color are these? They make me think of a mille fleur crow... (note no caps, just a description).
I always say I'm going to "look". And now I've got a 10yo lab mix, and those pesky OEGB... going to give hatching another try or 2, but if it doesn't work, do I do the unthinkable and return them to the shelter? I really, really wanted a cute 'gateway' chicken to raise 'n tempt people with...
Me too! Actually, I can't even get anyone to certify my flock until I have more than 30 'adult' birds. WA regs are basically because the ag dept is lazy, and they don't want to bother with small breeders. What's really weird, is I could pay my vet to test them, but I still wouldn't get...
loveourbirds,
Well, if I can only get 10% or less to hatch, and then they die... I'll never know! I've given my friend another go with a new batch of eggs (discovered a wine cooler is perfect for egg collection/storage - too bad it's supposed to be my dads b-day present next month. Keeps perfect...
Hello! So, I'm not going to be breeding my OEGB... They all have the white spots, which I've discovered is a fault. One hen's eggs are so porous NONE of the test eggs have hatched. They develop well thru 2nd candling, then just stop. The other hens have nice, thick shelled eggs, but so far only...
Oh, how I like lurking here... learn so much! Wish I could do more with OEGB's... But I can't eat 'em and the eggs (which my kids love) - Mathematically impossible to keep that many laying hens on this property! The joys of genetics...
So, thanks for the pic of the black oegb. If I wanted to replicate my rooster, but with "better type" (define, for me, the clueless) I would need to breed my rooster to a black hen, then one of those male offspring back onto one of my hens AND to be safe, breed a black rooster to one of my hens...
Okay. So here's the plan then. 1. Find out what a 'black' is/looks like. 2. hatch a couple eggs. 3. Find a couple of black??? to breed with (a male? couple females?)
Okay. So it's still not much of a plan...

Oh my. I was hoping I just hadn't found the right breed yet. I would love to make more of the little guys, but the 3 hens and 1 roo do not a good genetic basis for a good breed make, unless by some miracle they breed true... I will give it a go this summer and see who hatches and we'll know by...
Man, they really do NOT like to hold still for the camera. Not sure if you can see the gold tint to his neck feathers (hackle?). Also, at the bottom edge of that you can see reddish skin. Not sure why there are no feathers on his shoulders? Thanks for taking a look. I also tried to get a better...
Hello all!
Recently adopted some rescued bantams, 3 hens and a rooster/cockerel... After posting in the bantam thread, serama and d'uccle threads, got feedback these might be porcelain or self blue OEGB's? I need to take a better pic, when I can get 'em to hold still. But for now:
I think they...
