Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Ok, OTs, gota question..... A friend has a homing pigeon that took up residence on her porch and won't leave. She wants me to come rescue her. My concern is, could the pigeons give anything to my chickens? I don't plan on keeping them together, but my chickens free-range, so they may come...

Laugh all you want. I swear, peeing around the property keeps (most) of the pests away. It does nothing for stray dogs and snakes, but the racoons and deer stay away. My nephews are huge fans of peeing in the egde of the yard anyway. Especially the ones that live in the city.

I am going to ask a really stupid question, but what should a chicken's nostrils look like? Should they be bone dry or is some moisture ok? Would you consider it a "runny nose" if there is some clear mucus discharge? I ask because several of my birds have had what I think are runny noses for...

Actually, an index would rock! The 'search this thread' option on byc sucks.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

We had a wonderful lab when I was a little girl. My PawPaw rescued her from being drowned by her breeder because she wasn't "breed perfect". She was the best girl! Even my tough-as-nails MawMaw cried when she was killed by a bob cat. And she had personality out the wazoo---a little flaky and...

She's not a frizzy. She's be soooo much more atractive if she was! I am tellin ya, she has a BAD case of the Can't-Help-Its!! I will see if I either have or can take her pic, just so you can see. She's soooo odd looking!

What's wry tail? I have a hen that has the most jacked-up looking tail and all the feathers on her neck are wonky looking too! Her tail feathers grow in a circle and curl all over forty creations and her neck feathers all grow with a sort of swoosh to the side. She's not breed stock or...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

We do get a lot of nights below freezing, but it's usually warmer during the day. We rarely get what we call a "hard freeze". Last year, we had a fairly warm winter. The year before we had weeks of nights in the lower 20's. All the older folks around here and predicting one heck of a winter...

So how do you know if you have enough ventilation? And come this winter, don't you want to close all your windows/vents to help keep the heat in so the girls don't get frost bite? So I have four windows/vents and kept them open most of the summer, but since the temps have dropped, I have...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thanks Bee! Husband and I were crazy currious about that (having not killed a layer yet). Next question then, I have heard that if a hen starts eating her eggs that you should just kill her because she will never stop. We (thankfully) have not had this problem yet, but is there a way to...

Thanks---she's rotten! You should have seen what a wormy torn-up little runt she was when we brought her home! She made it through nearly being ripped in half by her mother and parvo! She is a tenacious little fluff.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Ok, OTs, got a question......... Husband and I were watching "Alaska: The Last Frontier" (love the show) Anyway, they killed on of their hens (it was an egg-eater) and as they were cleaning it, I swear it looked like there were three eggs in various stages of formation all laying up on the...

First and foremost, kudos for rescuing from the shelter! (My hubby and I volunteer with our shelter, so I can't tell you how much I appreciate folks who love "mutts" from shelters!) Second, I agree with whoever said to let her run double duty. Though of course Bee is right---can't fight off the...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Heavens, it has been a long day! A neighbor's dog got after one of my hens and she has run off (or worse). There are a lot of bloody feathers in the front yard, so I am pretty sure the bird is dead. I searched the woods around our house for two hours and not a single sign of her. I tried to...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Oh heavens, if I get a blue or green egg out of either one of those birds, y'all will be amongst the first to know, second only to our whole county, since I'll be whoopin' and hollerin' and doin' back flips across the back 40! And I will say, as far as health, we had some sort of respiratory...

Thanks much. So you think I shouldn't worry about weight? My other hens are just so.... round! lol, perhaps they are too pudgy? And yes, they free-range well. The dark headed one is a spider slayer! She stalks wolf spiders every morning as soon as I swing the run door open. It's freakish...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I understand if it's frowned upon; I wasn't griping. If it's not a big deal though, I'd appreciate some input. They are around 20-weeks-old, give or take a week. When I got them, they were black with some gold mixed in, so I was hoping for Wyandottes. Well, they are certainly NOT Wyandottes...
