-18 last night here in upstate ny. My chickens are terrified of the snow. Very minor frostbite so far, it's amazing they are even still alive, we've had up to -40 windchill many nights, my non-hardy glpolish just started laying and has laid her forth egg in six days!
Mine don't like the snow either, so I keep them shut up in the coop for now. Its large though, 8'x16' 8' high for eight hens and one roo. We had -10F this morning and they still laid three eggs with no extra light or heat.
@Volcanic Egger I would post a review on davesgarden that's where I found the most reviews on hatcheries. Like I said as far as healthy chicks, mine were. And if I didn't get a couple good Welsummers I wouldn't have believed they were pure bred. The two roos I didn't keep, with off colors were a...
Don't blame you. Same as I don't blame a woman on another thread who got mutts instead of pure Swedish flower hens from GreenFire for being mad, I would've never thought it from them. I just put a order in for black and blue Langshans and white jersey giants from SandHill, hope I'm not...
I think you get good and bad reviews from every hatchery. I've even heard some bad on GreenFire Farms. I had a good experience with Meyers, ordered 21, 21 lived. Of three welsummer roos, only one had nice correct colors, of three pullets, two had more of a reddish neck feathers, one is correct...
My Meyers EEs are laying dark green. I have one not laying yet, praying for blue. The whites are brownleghorn (big double yolker was 86grams!), browns welsummer, one EE is spotted green.
Getting some frozen eggs, averaging subzero here.
Wouldn't think that it would have hurt them?? How old were they? I personally wouldn't feed chicks anything but chick food, high protein is best for them, scrambled eggs are OK I think.
I don't think you want to feed chicks any 'treats'. I like Ramon noodles but they are not even good for humans. If you fed it to them dry...not good, if you fed it to them flavored with the seasoning packet...not good either, salt is not good for birds and Ramon noodles are high in salt.
I've heard of people using heated nipple waterers not only for crested breeds but for the big wattles on roos that get frostbite if dipped in their water. We have had many nights of -15F with
-25F windchill. My coop is large, dry and well vented. 8'x16' and 9' tall, vented at the eaves. I only...
I don't think I have a pic. The poor thing was eaten by a predator along with the buff polish roo and one of my wellie pullets when I was freeranging them. They were roosting in trees so I think a racoon. I stopped freeranging for awhile and now when I let them out they do come back into the...
I ordered ten with the eleven chicks of the three breeds I wanted. My wife told me if I ordered ten more the difference in shipping made them basically free.
Of the ten Leann's 'mystery' chicks I got one golden laced polish pullet picture in my above post ( her tail did look nicer before I...
I got one golden laced polish in leanns adopt me, I didn't want to keep her because of our winters but my kids fell in love with her. She's doing fine and we've had many days of -15F. I think the biggest problem is their heads getting wet from drinking.
When I ordered my chickens last year I was dead set on BA's. At the last minute I switched to EEgrs, Brown Leghorns, and Welsummers, for a colorful egg basket. My Wellies are very calm, and the roo is friendlier then the pullets, super nice roo.
Aww, so cute! We had a pet duch rabbit in the house when we were kids. Dad litter box trained it with a cat litter box with hardware cloth on top. It would chase a ball like a dog too, but never did fetch and bring it back Lol.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Little bit on freezing water pipes. We have a hundred yr old house with a partial stone basement, never had our pipes freeze, just need to make sure you have no air leaks, we have no insulation in our cellar but gets no 'breeze'. Outside water faucet is a outdoor one, it seals inside the house...
