I think it's when the organs are shutting down and the animal is starting the death process. I've seen it in cows, cats, piglets, and chicks. I suppose everything probably does it. Taking their last breaths of air before their lungs shut down. Sorry. :hugs

Breese are used as meat birds, but I wasn't impressed. They are great egg layers though, so I kept a couple hens for the chicken house instead of breeding and got rid of all my Bresse. Now I'm on to Bielefelder raising, they are nice...
(Bresse are just fatter leghorns. I went back to Cornish Cross, I've got teenage boys to feed after all. :oops:)
