    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Many of my June/July hatches are already free ranging (or yarding since I live in a rural city with a small yard) Some started out free ranging (broody mom) as soon as mama bird took them out of their broody box. They now roost outside and I have to go find tiny little Ayam Cemani Chicks...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I do frown on kids being on gadgets too much because but this is way different, these kids were engaging in agriculture. Although it wasn't the hard responsible work of feeding and cleaning water dishes... it was still outside with the ducks and having fun. Technology isn't bad, people...

I love learning this stuff and then applying it to the next hatch or the next time I hatch particular eggs I learned about. Yolks size being a factor just means its one of many factors. Could be a genetically larger bird and a giant yolk may hatch at the 21 day point, but a genetically...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I just went out to deliver eggs to some friends and I put some thought into egg yolk size too. The chicks that pipped early the mother hens have a fairly large egg but a tiny yolk. Maybe that has something to do with why they pipped 2 days early. Funny thing is the large yolked egg was laid...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I had 3 eggs that I was curious as to why they didn't hatch. My jumbo sized eggs that had Ayam Cemani x Red Rangers inside. They were still alive and I basically killed them. However I discovered that they still had a significant amount of yolk left. Had I waited a day or 2 they likely...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

22 chicks moved to brooder when I woke up, 2 being hatched by hand, one is already out of the shell the other is breaking out now after I cracked the shell to make it easier... very humid this morning and that might preventing them from being shrink wrapped... I had noticed a nasty odor in...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I am still concerned about her egg size growing. She is 18 months old and her eggs keep getting bigger and bigger. Eventually it's going to lead to a problem. One of the many problems with some of the meat hybrids I guess. She actually laid a shelless egg 2 days ago and no egg since. One...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I counted 20 chicks, Some still pipping. you can even see some of the Ayam Cemanis in the cage over on the right. my 5 Ayam Cemani x Red Ranger eggs are not hatching, the Hens eggs have slowly gotten bigger and bigger as time goes on, I believe they may be too big for hatching... I have...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I try my best not to mark them, but when I do I use colored zip ties and change them out once a week whether they need it or not. Changing them out once a week helps me to remember which ones have bands so I do not accidentally leave one on. I had that happen from a hatchery that banded a...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I counted 13 this morning, might have more now I even have a red one from the reverse cross, he or she is in the cage on the right. The ones outside of the cage are Dorking x (Dorking x Red Rangers) which is the better of the 2 crosses as far as selecting for the next generation. Inside...

I would not be shocked if the chow down not the greens too. Unlike starchy potatoes the greens of the sweet potatoes are edible to humans. Maybe that means chickens will eat them too. I have never grown them so I do not know this for certain.

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I have opened so many incubators to get chicks out for playing soccer with the eggs that hadn't happened yet thinking I was helping. I have had so many chicks that needed to be hand hatched which cuts down on their survivability. However I became really good at it and even today when I believe...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I have normal early pippers starting now, and about 4 other super early pippers that will hatch out soon. They are stuck in there until Saturday. Poor things but survival is easier on them than the others if I shrink wrap them with a sudden rush of low humidity. I need to set this up in the...

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Saturday is hatch day, no one told these 2 little cuties. It doesn't hurt to put them in Lockdown early, glad I did because they were pipping on day 18. They sure are going to be hungry and thirsty waiting for the others.

    JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Good point. I had even more eggs pip last night from the same flock while the eggs from other flocks did not pip the nesting box of the early pippers is inside of a shed that is much warmer than all the other nesting boxes in summer. Maybe the pippers are all the eggs collected late so they...
