Maybe these pictures will help you look at your own. Cockerels feather out slower, and tend to be smaller than the pullets..they catch up later. Note the differences in the crest at this age. In the second picture of the cockerel you can see the waddles starting to come in. Hallerlake pointed...
I know the feeling..LuLu has started laying, but not every day. I was able to put two of her eggs in the first hatch batch and tomorrow three will go in. The other two girls (Spitz) are laying well so theirs go in too. I'm so excited I can't stand it...I want these two first ones to be cream...
I don't have a Spitz hen laying yet...I only have one Spitz hen! BUT...I did notice that my Orpington hen is not wanting to leave the nest. Maybe I should put a couple fake eggs out and see if she stays.
I just got 15 Spitz eggs in the mail today! I am not expecting much, if anything...but I just had to try! I'm so excited. I was on my way out the door so I didn't have time to candle them.
The second number one? Of the pictures you re-posted in this post....both pictures are of the same roo. AND it is Nod..the one I like.
I think you are telling me the orange and lt blue banded ones are keepers and to not keep red banded roo.
Roo #1 (red)
Roo #2 (orange)
Roo #3 (blue)
#2 and #3 have the same comb. #1 is the biggest, #2 is the smallest of the three and #3 is medium. #2 has really pleasing, small, well balanced spangles..but I don't really think any of them have bad spangling. I've stared at them...
Thanks Carla..but dang it... thought I had it figured out...now you are making me re-think. In the first series of roos..I was going to keep #1 and then the roo in the second set of pics I posted (both picks are same roo) I like the combs of the two that are like the first roo...but the second...
I have two of them that have combs just like number one, I only posted one of them. I've got it down to three roos out of six. If I keep two...that leaves me with just having to eliminate one. Phew!
This is the one I didn't picture, his wattles are more even.
Here he is falling asleep =)
Most chickens begin laying 20-24 weeks. 16 weeks is pretty early, but not unheard of. I'm not sure specifically for Spitzhaubens.
My 21 week old Roo has been mounting some of the girls..but still no crowing.
I have 7 roos in total..2 of them are at least 21 weeks and NOBODY has ever crowed or even attempted to.
I am learning that the wattles, and saddle feathers tell a lot...but you have to wait so long to see that. I thought I had 2 pullets because one of them hardly has any wattles compared to...
