First Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon- Join us! Set Day: Easter

I went out and took some pics this afternoon to try and get them side by side where the differences are more apparent. Here is the best pic I got to illustrate: The tom is on the left. As you can see, the dangly bit under his neck is larger and curves round/down whereas the hen's is smaller...

Yeah, I think its harder to tell in photos than in person. What I didn't mention is body type. The hen has a rounded body with neatly laid feathers. The tom is much lankier. His body is not yet filled out since he is still growing but he's all legs so is taller than the hen. His feathers...

Here is my hen (you can see the tom's head sticking up behind the dog crate she is sitting on): And here he is by himself: You can see the snood on the tom is bigger. The red flap under the head is bigger and much redder on the tom (though I've noticed that is something that changes. When...

Okay, now this is interesting. I ended up with a pair of RP's, and barking is the word I've used to describe my hen too, but everyone else I've mentioned it to just looks at me blankly. It started when I let them out of the turkey pen for the first time to mingle with the chickens. She made a...

Please keep us updated. I haven't had to treat this condition yet, but do like to have information "stored away" so that in the event I need it, its there.

Arielle, I know some people have had good success with straight Vitamin E. Just take a capsule, nip the tip off and squirt the contents directly into the bird's mouth. For some, just one application seemed to be all they needed. For others they had to do it twice a day for several days until...

Do you suppose a Sultan could raise poults? I have a broody Sultan right now and I'm wondering if I put a couple of poults under her at night, if she might accept and raise them?

I have found that putting a towel over their head calms them immensely. I'm wondering if you could have one person hold her with a towel over her head, while the other treats the wound?

Belated thanks to everyone for the suggestions on lowering the humidity. I was gone all day yesterday building my new coop at my new property but opened a tool and out popped one of those little dessicant packets so I popped it in my pocket and when I returned last night, put it in the...

I did the 20-day candling on my two remaining RP eggs this evening. I weighed them and also compared the air cell to the chart. I saw movement in both so that was good, but I'm a little concerned that the air cell is too small. I'm doing a dry hatch so I'm not sure if there's anything to be...

What kind did you get? My feed stores only had BBB and BBW and I didn't want them as I don't have processing equipment big enough - I wanted the heritage birds. I'm so envious of people that get to choose from heritage breeds at their feed store.

That IS funny! Other options are nest boxes or a chick brooder. No way is that thing going to the dump from MY house.

I'm way behind y'all but I know there was someone else set some turkey eggs the same day as me - Arielle was that you? Anyway, I am on day 17 now but thought I'd report with the results of my 15-day candling, which weren't that good. I started with 10 eggs and I'm down to 2 The others were...

I just looked at my incubation log and found I had different results. Well, actually it depends on the type of eggs. I have 10 RP turkeys and 2 muscovy's. The 2 muscovy's are both clear (I suspect the guy does not have a drake so that wasn't too surprising). They did lose far less moisture...

I just did the same thing! No matter how much I examine those charts, I never can remember exactly where the air cell was, so today I drew the air cell on the egg and then held it up to the chart. I'm pleased that my turkey eggs seem to be right on track. I was concerned that the air cell...

I have heard before that lowering the temp a degree or so at lockdown is a good idea but have never remembered to do it on previous hatches. I plan to this time though. The theory is that by this stage the chick is able to generate some of its own heat.

How much do you turn down the heat? (And is the humidity just turned up to hatching humidity for chickens or are you looking for higher/lower than that?)

On my last hatch, when I was on day 3, I looked up from the incubator with my best worried face and told DH, "I'm not hearing any peeping yet". For a second he took me seriously and asked "Should you be?"

My turkey eggs are only on day 8 so it will be awhile before they need tutors - do the tutors need to be close to their age or does it still work when there is an age difference? Anyway, it will be great to see you this week. You had said something earlier about a Sportsman in Wichita - is...
