    Raising Baby Chick-Along

Ok, here are the 2 broodies, I'm not sure what the brown one is. Doesn't look like it in this photo, but the black one is a Frilki We put in one of our netgear cameras, and I noticed that when the black one got up, the brown one ran after her and they stayed out for about 25 minutes. Is...

I forgot to say, the photo of that coop, has the parents to these eggs in it. I think you can see the splash on the left.....

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

Ok lockdown tonight! I have 2 TINY birds brooding right now. I moved out all the other birds in their coop, and they are all alone in this little grow out coop. I gave the larger smooth frilkie 3 eggs. She didn't really try to pull them under her, so I shoved them under the best I could...

ADORABLE little chicks everyone!! I'm not impacted by any of the fires, other than watching them burn in the distance, breathing the smoke and everything covered in ash. But the damage is catastrophic in Ventura. The news reports haven't come close to reporting the carnage. The hills were...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

I am feeling very sad there are no little chicks running around, and there is no plan for any little chicks to run around. I FAILED miserably in selling the last 10 batches of chicks - mainly because I never really tried. Now I can't move the grow outs into the pens, because I don't want...

It was 2 years ago, I don't remember, other than it was a yolk sack infection. Which seemed weird to me, since they were WELL beyond their yolk sack days. I will look for the report, but it's in storage, so it might take me a few days.

It is so nerve wracking waiting for the necropsy results. I too sent birds off, and found it was an infection they probably picked up when they hatched - killed them 4 months later. I'm glad it wasn't Mareks!!!

Thanks!! She seems to be making steady improvement. I just wish she had other silkies to hang out with in there. I have a smooth frilkie that has to be the slowest bird I have....she seems to sit in one corner all day - only getting up to eat or drink. She does go in and out of the coop, but...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

The sad thing about the vaulted heads on some silkies - They are much more susceptible to brain damage. I have a beautiful blue silkie that got pecked pretty hard by someone in the pen. When we found her, her head was bloody. She couldn't walk straight, she was stumbling around in circles...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

I start giving them treats as soon as they are outside. BUT, if they are still inside, I add grit with the treats. I have NO GRASS, just a dry desert for a yard. But I have lots of trees. I have tree that overhangs the baby coops, and they love the leaves. Any time we cut down branches, we...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

Congratulations on a broody!! I don't know what others do, but I left my broody alone. She got up once per day to eat, poo and dust bathe with no help from me. She didn't lose any weight. She looks healthy. So, I think they are smart enough to take care of their needs on their own. She...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

This is the first year I've ever had such stubborn birds - mine are my Exchequer Leghorns. They may have a death wish - apparently they have not seen the gigantic raccoon that lavender our neighbor's shed. I'm guessing that should be "live under" our neighbor's shed.....:plbb

On my local facebook chicken page, there is someone trying to sell 7 dwarf nigerian goats.....not chickens, but very, very cute goats. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155486676409002&set=pcb.1315542711887543&type=3

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

I have an opening at the top of the coop that the chickens roost on (I know I"m asking for trouble, but they like it). They jump out each morning. They wander back to the gate late afternoon. We have hawks during the day. But they don't mess with the hens. One of my Ayam Cemanis got out...

I think these Polish are girls. They stay inside, so it's harder to take their picture....

Ok, I'm supposed to be working, so these are just quick photos. The Polish I think are boys.

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

I don't have any photos of the ones I know are boys - I'll try to get them. They have BIG lumpy redish combs on their beaks, they have sharp straight feathers on their heads. This one has a very small beige comb, and nice round even feathers. I'll get better photos of them all. I'd hate to...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

Their eggs are a little bigger than bantam, but still not "large". I moved them in with the big girls, but they are the only dark green eggs I'm getting in that pen. So, it's easy to track. That's weird that you have such a difference in size. I hope the 'bantam" size gets bigger! I hope...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

Thanks, I think there are silkies, Frizzled OE, and a whole bunch of chicks that I hatched from the last auction I won. There were CCL, Maran, Leghorn and several others.
