I love my Gems! One of my older girls started annoyingly pecking me really hard when she wants treats. She was my favorite until that but since I’ve had to pen them up do to persistent hawks she hasn’t done it in awhile. It did occur to me that she may feel under appreciated since she lays me...
Just thought I would get your opinion on this one. Is she just a lighter sapphire gem or another kind of blue bird? She is almost 12-13 weeks now. She developed just like my other sapphire gems but is a little bigger (also a little older). She had mostly yellow feet that darkened and a yellow...
I have two girls and love them. We haven’t had any aggressive behaviors but they are at the bottom of the pecking order since my older girls put them in their place when they were introduced. I do have one that protects her black sexlink friend. She gets picked on more then the others and my...
That’s funny you should say that about the barnevelders. Last spring I got some and they ended up all being roosters. Mine ended up being the flightier chickens I’ve seen. Maybe it’s because they were still young but they were twice the size of my hens and yet ran away from them. I handled them...
I had 3 gems all different shades. A hawk got my darkest one just after they started laying. Of the two I have left one is very fluffy and well kept and the other looks a little scraggly.
One of my Gems laid her first egg Friday at only 14 weeks. Sunday I got two more (one really tiny). And another one today. Two out of the first 3 were double yokes.
Here is an update of my girls at 8 weeks. I love that they each are varying shades! And they are still my favorite bread by far in ways of temperament. They are not skiddish or flighty like my Barnevelders roosters were. They let me pet them and even don’t mind being held. My oringal 6 didn’t...
Hey y’all! I noticed a trend when comparing sapphire gem pullets and cockerels. It may help relieve some fears of those concerned that they still may have a roo in their mists even without the classic yellow dot. It seems that roosters have a much lighter ring around the eyes as they develop...
It’s amazing how the chick with the yellow beak and feet darkened up so much. Do you know at how many weeks old she started doing that? I am noticing where it looks like my chicks are getting darker feet so hopefully that’s a sign they are all pullets.
Nice! She is beautiful!!!
This is my one in question at 4 weeks. Bigger comb and some pink waddle but nothing getting red yet. My black sexlink has really red starting of a waddle and I know she’s a girl so may not be anything.
Here are my latest progression pictures of my Gems. Have a said before how much I love this breed? They are by far my favorite breed I’ve raised so far. Jazz jumps right up on my arms then gets comfy ready to sleep. I try to put her back and finish cleaning up their cage or give them food and...
Thank you all for this thread. It has been very helpful in learning about this breed. I just picked up 3 Sapphire Gems at TSC on Friday. So far I am loving their very sweet temperments. I was burned last spring with all roosters so I thought I would stay safe with sex-link pullets. Though I hear...
