Question for those hatching poults ... do you let the hen brood them or do you take them from the hen and brood them yourself?? We have done it both ways these last 10 years. Always have better results when we brood the poults ourselves. When we leave the poults with the hens, we experience...

I'd be able to host the one on our regular Homesteading Weekend ... the weeks leading up to that weekend are filled with getting the homestead 'spit shined' so I wouldn't be able to host an earlier weekend. I only put up the poll because Paradise said we needed one!! Here is the link to the...

Jamie, You really should venture about 45 miles to the east of you to our place. We can give you an education on chickens (& other poultry) as well as other homesteading things you can do in town! I kept chickens, honey bees & meat rabbits at my home in the middle of a subdivision before we...

Quote: and to the Illinois thread!! I'm just east of you, between I-88 and I-80, west of I-39. What kind of flock do you have? And I'm between the two of you in Whiteside County. If you don't have coyotes, then you have fox. Of the two, I prefer coyotes. They'll take a bird, but they...

Winter of '78/79 was a good one. Very similar to last year's snow, except 78/79 had more ice. Now there was a late blizzard in the early 70's where I remember finding Easter eggs in 1'-2' of snow! I was born down south in 1960 and moved to the eastern IA area in 1969. I lived in eastern NC...

Errr ... I hate doing ducks, even though we have a plucker! If I have to do ducks (home-use) they get skinned so I don't have to deal with the feathers. If I'm collecting down for a pillow, I can easily collect it from the skinned duck!
