Oh the poor frozen dear. Y’all are in the same boat as us, ice and all.
We’ve finally gotten free of the polar vortex ourselves. It got pretty bad, I even moved the birds inside for those worst day. If my Sebrights were cold enough to let me pick them up and cuddle in my coat with zero fuss...
My Sebrights are creeping towards being 7 months old and have finally grown combs. I’m so proud. They’ve also contributed several eggs to the incubator crossed with my Jap boys. I’m curious to see how their patterns come across. If all goes well I might try to pen them and see if I can...
I’m going to say cockerel based on comb growth and demeanor. My 3 month old pullets have zero comb or wattle development and are very skittish even after being handled as chicks. I’d watch for any redness in the next few weeks, that will be very telling.
I agree, her hormones will be running high and the urge to mother will take over. Let the Dutch hatch out and slip the sebrights in at night. She'll be very pleased with all of her magically twinned eggs. ;)
And grab a couple silvers if you can, Heartland makes them so lovely and sharp. Here's...
As an enabler, I'd say get more sebrights and slip them under her in the night, but maybe throw a heating pad in nearby just in case. I'd doubt your girl is a very good counter. :)
I say it's worth trying, but only time will tell. Lots of stories here on both sides for successful young first time mothers to little ladies who play broody like kids play house.
Good luck! I hope you get some beauties, I know I sure did.
Call Heartland Hatchery, they are in Amsterdam MO and have some very nice sebrights with really clean lacing. I'm sure they could hook you up with a nice cockerel if you can't source one. That's where I got mine a few months ago.
Just ny experience- at six weeks old, mine still have zero comb or even pink development. I'd say any that early is a very strong indicator. I think I saw on this thread something about the 10 week mark before hens start any development.
3 Golden Sebrights on the morning of their 4th week. I'm worried that the tiny one might be a boy based on behavior, as I've yet to see any comb development. Love these tiny birds, so spunky!
