I had one in each hole today when my giant orpinton decided she wanted to lay. She didn't care that all the boxes where full. She just went from hole to hole to see which hole had the least angry carpeting, sat on the poor thing and laid an egg. Poor Lucy was squashed!
My nest boxes are easy to...
14 hens and my three holer nest box isn't cutting it anymore. I only have 7 laying and they will bug the crap out of each other while laying.
My holes are 13" sqaure as I have larger breeds.
This time i took a shortcut. I prchased a dark brown cube shelf by threshold from target. It is...

My blog is FINALLY up and running. It will take me several days to get the coop build up and running, as it will take several posts, filled with photos, to cover it all! So hang in there. My DH is also a co-poster, so craziness abounds!

Be prepared to replace that one sooner than later. The wood is terrible and doesn't last. Was glad to see the improvements made to the design from last year to this one. Lock blocks on nesting floor, extra door latches etc ...but the wall/roof of nest box still has a leaking issue. The slide out...
Move in day was yesterday. They played in and out and in again. They free ranged, and went in again. The broody was the easiest. Moved the whole nest while she was out for a walk. Showed her the nest when she was done. Plop. The other girls kept trying to get into her box to lay, so I spent the...
Re: the chick thing. You can try, but be ready for rejection. Mine rejected the introduced babies.
Re:Oodalolly coop. Dh and I just went through all the receipts I kept for this giant coop AND run. The grand total.....$2750.00 and 20-35 hours a week by be for 3 months! Which includes time to...
Agree, and good glory, the man hours I've put in. Insanity.
Last step on mine. I started putting on the corrugated PVC roof on the run. I don't like it. And there is no way it will hold up to our winds or snow. Going to go get thin ply wood and just paint it.
Roof is only for shade and rain...
I make 3" PVC feeders, 2 " PVC oyster and grit dispensers, and 5 gallon bucket feeders and water buckets. I will post step by step photo directions on my blog the next one I build. (here too)
almost there!
Still to do:
Vertical trim on the run posts.
the top of the run already has hardware cloth, but the trim needs done around the top edge and the corrugated roof goes on. Then I need to install the branch in the run.
Lastly, I need to hang the oyster and grit dispensers inside.
I...
Another 5 hours today, foggy, dark and wet today. The people door is finished and in the barn waiting to be put up. The devil wire is done on the run. The trim covering the edges isn't up yet. The corregated roof isn't up yet either.
The chicken ramp is in the barn, painted, but not assembled.
Winds roared again today. But before i gave up,i managed one piece of demon wire (not fun on a calm day...add wind and ugh), and it's not shown in the photo. i trimmed the door for the run, and painted some more trimwork.
Then the wind won, i decided to climb on the tractor for the rest of the...
Winds howled at 40 mph on my hill today. I managed the framework and painting on the run as well as the hardware cloth and trim on the peoe door.
Tomorrow, i'll paint the door trim, and until the wind gets unbearable again, work on the hardware cloth on the run and its second coat of paint.
So...
