    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well our feed store did not get this memo. It looks exactly like scratch here. Obviously different areas than. I can buy a bag and prove it, but it would be a waste

No I did not save a single bird. My dog also died in the fire. It is/was devastating. Hope you read something in my fire safety thread that will help you avoid such heartache. I did however have 12 chicks in the basement, as well as one hen down there who had frost bite, so technically they...

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you. Mash, Crumble and Pellets are all a consistency. I mentioned grower/layer because those both come in crumbles. I mentioned starter because it's a finer consistency than crumble. Layer comes in pelleted, mashed or crumble here. Only layer comes in mash...

Mash is formulated. It does look similar to scratch, but definitely is NOT scratch. Mash is the same nation wide. Purina calls this Mash.. as does many local co-ops. Purnina is all of North America, so I think it's generally accepted as mash.

We can not get mash in any other way but layer, so I don't get it. If only they had it without the additional calcium, I'd feel better about feeding it to my birds. Whole foods make more sense to me. I may just formulate my own feed once the barn is rebuilt. :)

Mash is this: The picture shown is : Starter, crumble (grower or layer) and than pellets. Mash is whole grains.

Mash would be the best in a ferment. You'd see a heck of a lot more bubbles. I made a closet for my FF for this kind of weather. Most just bring it inside the house, but that's a whole lot of buckets, and a decent distance to carry said buckets.

I haven't added feed to my chick FF bucket in a couple weeks. It's not bad yet. I do have to add more feed though. There is no limit if you keep adding feed. I bet there is a limit if you don't.. as I added too much from the get-go in that bucket, and needed to use up what I already had...

I think the hogs were the first livestock to be fed FF. You can google "pigs and fermented feed". They like slop right? I don't really know. Pigs are just a dream for me right now. Some day. Yes I ferment grains (scratch) separately and another bucket of grower + scratch (well actually 3...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The part the birds currently reside in is an addition to the original barn which was painted this red colour. You can see the addition to the right. The big open door is where the birds live, and what was added to the original structure. You can see where there were windows and such...

Some FF silkies below. And a Polish who had to be given a haircut as well hehe. Believe it or not, they all have haircuts already. I don't want to make them look terrible.. Most of the FF in their crests/beards was there prior to the hair cut. I'm going to wash all these guys once it's warm...

Oh and I also ferment my scratch grains. They don't get regular scratch. They get fermented scratch daily.

I do not. Some say to increase protein in the winter (where Beekissed did the opposite). I just keep it the same. Always grower. If there is a sale on turkey grower I will buy that (it's 24% protein) but I'll 'water it down' with more scratch than I would regular grower. I don't really have a...

It does not increase the protein, it makes it more usable to the body. :) I can't tell you what to make your protein level. Everyone prefers different %'s. I'd aim for 18% for my own birds. Some people like 15-16% and others 22%. Hope someone else can help you with your other questions...
