Good breeders sell out early, with pre-orders for months ahead....that would be my guess (having been on waiting lists for various breeds before).

Sorry, my reply got buried in the middle of your post. Here it is alone: I am not a breeder, but I have a few lavenders, none of which are perfect. What struck me about the photos though, is the birds almost look like they are crested. Perhaps it is the photo angle?

Sorry to hear about your bad first hatch. My first hatch, I got nothing, so don't give up! There are so many factors involved in hatching, that it is difficult to know exactly what went wrong, although experience is the best teacher. I can tell you that I have one hen who's eggs will not...

I have two pullets that are 28 weeks and still haven't started laying. I don't light my coop though. In my experience, this is not the most productive breed, but their eggs are pretty and so are the birds.

Thanks for your reply! I am torn about what to do. I just found out I will be getting rid of some birds tomorrow. If I keep this small bird in hopes it is a pullet and it turns out to be a cockerel, I don't think it will hold its own in the bachelor pen. The slow growth and just a gut...

Thanks. My adult rooster has a lot of gold leakage, so I imagine these offspring will have the same. Right now, I am happy to have a couple pullets as this was my most cockerel-heavy hatch ever!

My lavenders are 10 weeks old. It has become clear which are cockerels and which are pullets, except for one bird, which I think might be a cockerel. This bird is very under-sized, very round in shape, and although the comb is not pink, I think it is a cockerel. I plan to get rid of the...

Sometimes that's just the way it falls. Frustrating, yes, but keep trying it eventually it will turn around. I've had some hatches mostly cockerels, and others mostly pullets. This spring, I bought the most expensive eggs I've ever purchased. They were shipped, so I was very pleased that 7...

I I think 25% lavender (50% split, 25% black) Someone correct me if I am wrong, please.

It is hard to see their legs in the photos, but I found my cockerels had much thicker legs. One of my cockerels feathered in very quickly and had a tail at a young age (I thought he was female for weeks). I ended out keeping him.

I have also heard the black bars called fretting, and that it is undesirable. Whoever asked about the slow feathering (and please keep in mind I am not terribly knowledgable about these birds): I posted photos of my birds as chicks and someone mentioned it was nice to see birds that age with...

Thanks. That was my intent, but I was not particularly fond of either of them. Not that they are mean or anything, just no evidence of charm or particular friendliness. I am looking for any excuse to choose one over the other!

Thank you. This is helpful. I have a mixed backyard flock, and have been more focused on a colorful egg basket than any particular breed. If I'm going to keep one of these roosters, I would much rather choose one that might have some potential, as opposed to just blindly selecting one.

I have 5 days left to choose between 2 lavender cockerels, and would love input from others. Neither cockerel is great. Both have the "k factor" in their tail feathers. Both are about 21 weeks old. Cockerel #1: This rooster was slower to feather as a chick. He is taller and slimmer than...

I'm going to be selecting one of my two lavender roosters soon. Right now, they are 13 weeks old. One looked like a boy very early on and was slow to feather at first, but is now catching up. The other feathered out very quickly, but has not grown real tail or sickle feathers yet. In fact...

It may be easier to get just any female hen to keep him company for a while, so he won't make upu crazy. Then you can take your time looking for a quality Ameraucana.
