With luck, I am setting 6 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 4 cuckoo maran, four b/b/s orpingtons, a couple of cochin eggs and two or three splash maran. All picked up from a local seller, so that's why such an assortment. My silkies from the last hatch are doing great!

My husband enabled me to get more eggs after I sold about half of the last hatch right away so I may also be in the September hatch a long!! this is the last batch for the year tho - winter will set in soon and I don't want to have to keep birds in the house for longer than necessary!

I am NOT an expert but I think that chick may have died a little earlier than day 19 and the hen knew it.

Just a heads up - I have two chickies left in my brinsea to dry off - one is a cute little showgirl silkie (the only one I got!) that was coated in egg white. Been taking it off a little at a time and popping her back in with another silkie for company. I candled all the remaining eggs - most...

I had one zip and die yesterday too. I was KICKING myself as just 10 minutes before I decided to help it was chirping. Nice healthy looking chick too, no yolk sac hanging out or anything. Very sad.

I'll post this later in the emergencies section, but just curious as everyone here is hatching now.. I have a huge JG chick that hatched a few hours ago and appears to have maybe a slipped tendon? I thought it was spraddle leg but one leg just sticks all the way back and even with a splint he...

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy : Nothing hatched this morning ... it's going to be a long day Go little guys go!!!!!!! Mommy is waiting for you!!!! I did finally cave and open my brinsea. 12 little guys stuffed in there was making it hard for anything else to hatch. Maybe brinsea assumes everyone uses...

Well with a little 'help' (ahem) my hovabator has produced 14 chickens out of 20 eggs with the potential of a couple more that are still in 'chick ICU' (I helped em pip and wrapped them up). If I use that one again I'll take the great advice here and try dry hatching and get a replacement...

Congrats Mrs. Fluffy Puffy!!! Keeping my fingers crossed for the lil ones. I bet they are going to be ultra cute.. What does one do with button quail anyways? they seem awfully small - do they live in a birdcage? a coop? My brinsea has produced another chick and almost all the 19 eggs have...

Quote: Thanks At least half my eggs are in the brinsea and one silkie just popped out, no trouble whatsoever. So I know it's the hovabator and/or my management of it. Next time I'm idiot proof all the way. One blue orp is out (early) and one jersey giant (also early). The JG has a huge...

I tell ya, I LOVE the brinsea as compared to the hovabator. Maybe I will not say the same thing tomorrow on hatch day but the hovabator (which HAS shown steady temps and humidity but who knows how accurate they are? I have three thermometers including a brinsea spot check in there!) has had...

I lost one, sniff. zipped halfway around and dried out even with condensation on the windows. I probably decided to step in about 10 minutes after it was already dead. It was a HUGE chick for the egg, so that may have had something to do with it.

Quote: Oh good. Not exactly hatching at the same time, but the silkies are hatching first so that's even better. Big eggs have just a few pips this morning so on track to hatch tomorrow. I have too many chickens as it is, so I didn't want to have to set up yet another brooder unless I have to.

Quote: Why is this? are they a lot bigger? Should I set up a separate brooder for silkie and regular chicks? I don't want my silkies pecked to death. Speaking of which, I must not have totally screwed the humidity up last night - I have a zipper from one that was pipped when I opened the bator!

Well I probably messed up the hovabator side of the hatch (I have eggs in two incubators). Had to open up the incubator at 1AM last night as my one preemie chick was having some sort of attack and appeared to be dying. it was flopping around and gasping, oddly like it was drowning but there's no...

Well, I now have two day 19 hatchers and one more pipped. The two both seemed a bit weak, and one had blood left in the egg, but both are currently stumbling around and peeping so they seem ok so far. Go chickies go!!!

One is out!! a little vaulted skull silkie. S/he may not make it tho - she has a decent amount of blood left in her shell but does not appear to be bleeding now. Is staggering around a little and peeping but weak. Still, it's nice to know something hatched. the egg says b/b/s - I think that...
