The feed I had the flock on their whole lives had bugs the last time so I picked up an all flock pellet. It fluffs up nicely and everyone seems to like it better than the old stuff.
I've been fermenting pigeon feed and giving it as scratch. When the scratch is gone I separate most of the liquid and add to feed for a couple days while I ferment some more. They seem to enjoy this as a change of pace.
The girls didn't seem to care for fermented feed for a bit so I was feeding wet food instead. I decided to ferment some corn free pigeon feed and fed it as a snack. It was liked well enough that I used the leftover liquid to jumpstart some crumbles again. They were gobbling it down this morning...
I've gotten to the point I add water to the bucket every couple days and then enough feed to get the desired consistency, my girls don't care for it if it goes longer than that. I just needed a bigger bucket because I over filled what I was using.
Bigger bucket was a good idea, should have done it long ago. FF bucket is sitting on top of the scratch bucket and when I moved it last night it sounded like a soda...fizzy and alive :yesss:
I realize these are a little dark, but there was an overnight explosion in my feed bucket! I was using a two bucket system, 1 gallon capacity each, but the buckets are flimsy and tore except this one. Switching to one 3.5 gallon bucket. Shoulda done that the last time.
You can easily fix that. Click on Unwatch thread top right then click on watch thread and ahen you get the pop up click with email notifications. I'm sure there's another way but this one is what I know.
Thank you!! It's not a long walk but I find I'm either juggling feeders or carrying a heavy glass container out there. Think I will try 1 and 3 gallon buckets and see which I prefer.
I'm not thrilled with my current fermenting vessel, size it too big and it's glass so I'm getting some food grade buckets today.
@lazy gardener what size buckets did you say you use? I think one gallon buckets for one days worth of feed will be ok for 9 chickens.
I've been fermenting feed a few months now. I've finally gotten to the point where I don't have to weigh and measure to get the right consistency. I no longer wash the crock I'm fermenting in before I backslop and start a new batch, and if the feed separates a bit I add a little dry oatmeal to...
The feed I normally use gets a nice scoby over night. The new stuff I tried, also organic, never did much and I checked the date, less than 30 days old. The protein was 2% less than the Bar Ale I prefer.
Eggs from the Welsummer weren't the pretty terra cotta color any more, the blue eggs...
@barred2rock I changed feed and my birds didn't like it. It's what I had so I kept feeding it and eventually they came around.
Why did you change feed? Just curious because I was having trouble finding the stuff I normally buy
@EggSighted4Life I feed FF every day, but I also leave out dry food. Sometimes the dry goes faster, other times the FF does. I figure the birds know what they need and will eat it.
