Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

That’s the right one but for six chicks you really don’t need the extra large. I use that size for 20.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

@bruceha2000 you can pick up a Uninterrupted Power Supply/Battery backup at WM or Amazon for about $45. It will hold the heating pad on for about an hour if the power goes out. As long as it’s not an extended outage you’ll be good and the pad won’t reset.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Four legged as they were eaten in the chicken yard, and eaten completely, so My guess is either coyotes as the ones I’ve seen are large this year or a Bobcat. I don’t think the smaller predators could have done the damage to the run without teamwork and they usually just eat the easy parts and...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Had a coop break in last night and lost about 20 birds. It looks like brute force was used to pry a section of the run up and I just had the coop door pulled shut so secondary entry was easy. I’ve got the remaining birds back in the grow out pen as that coop will comfortably hold what I have...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I usually have 20-25 in a brooder. That was less than 12hrs. I tried fuzzy side down in the morning and flipped it back in the afternoon.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Here’s the pad. It’s just a small spot but too close to the plug for comfort. This is my oldest pad you can see where it used to bend in the original frame. The new caves and the newest flat version allow for that to remain flat. *I'm looking at the new flat version and it bends up just like it...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

It’s the Sunbeam XL but it’s not heat damage (thankfully). Its a spot from being picked by the chicks not from heat of the pad. My original setup allowed for 1-2 inches exposed for the plug to flex 90 degrees. When inverted so that the chicks would have the green fuzzy side next to them instead...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I tried pad under once and my oldest heating pad has a bald spot to show for it. It might have been different had I not put it fuzzy side down.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

@aart it's just so I can see that everything is on and working the more important sensor is the one that lets me see the ambient temp in the shed, it can get hot in there. I have the receiver up in the house. I adjust off of chick behavior usually, I have a infrared thermometer around here...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I’ve got the new open concept MHP ready to go for the bantam chicks arriving this week. I’ve set the legs of the MHP to 2” in the back and 2.5” in the front. It looks really low but the wire rack setup isn’t as bulky as the wood frames I used for the cave setup. I also haven’t covered it yet...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

@DellaMyDarling I’d say 95% (if not more) of us use this Sunbeam model. It’s the only one I can find that you can turn off the “auto off”. I connect mine to a UPS backup due to frequent power flickers in the spring and summer.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I’ve got 25 bantam chicks arriving next week. Trying out the flat version with these chicks. I’ve questioned myself more about giving up my cave setup than when I originally switched to the MHP method. :):)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I’ll add that at arrival to 1-2 weeks you could go over 25 but once they’re a little bigger it’s too crowded in my opinion. It should also be mentioned that my MHPs are “caves” open on the front with smaller openings on the sides. They are open on 3 sides but there are corners in the back that...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I just got 70 chicks last Tuesday. My rule is no more than 25 chicks to a 12x24 MHP. I have 3 brooders set up with the chicks spread out evenly between them. I thought about one large brooder with the 3 MHPs but thought that the chicks might try to crowd into one and lead to crushed chicks. It...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

It happened in the afternoon while I’d let the chickens out to free range in the chicken yard a fenced 1/3rd acre. All the coyotes did was get over a 5 ft fence. I went inside for about 30-45min and came back out to a massacre.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Each brooder of 25 has its own 12x24 MHP. It’s the setup I’ve used for the last 2 new chick arrivals. I wouldn’t push past that much as it does get crowded. I have a 4th brooder box that could be used if it looks like the chicks need more space. Our usual April temps are in the 50s, I start the...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

They’ll be split up 25 to a brooder. I’ve got 4 brooders so I’ll have one free to rotate chicks to while cleaning. I already have the heating pads so the only thing I need to build is a few more frames. I doubt I’ll ever use heat lamps again. I’ve lost too many animals and my in-laws lost a...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

It’s getting harder and harder to find a heating pad without a digital control pad. I use a small UPS (uninterrupted power supply) device I got at Walmart since we have numerous power flickers during storm season. It will hold the heating pad on for any power outage 30 minutes or less. I’ve...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I've got 25 in the brooder with outside temperatures similar to yours. I'd say to start your MHP on a lower setting so your providing warmth but not adding much to the ambient temperature. I have the sunbeam pad set to 3 for 1 week old chicks. The chicks run in and out during the day but spend...

I can link to Title 29 of the statute but not to the specific section. Unless I go to a third party site but then it's not on the states site. The section that addresses this is §29-5-410. Oklahoma Title 29
