    The Legbar Thread!

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I can't remember. Are legbars supposed to have yellow legs? Or does it matter?

Cute chick Goldie! I leg banded all my legbars with zip ties about a year ago. I'm not sure what happened, but only one hen still has her zip tie on. They are all molting and I can't tell them apart anymore. When I mark my chicks I have used food coloring and zip ties. It seems like the...

    The Legbar Thread!

    1. Personal experience with them? I bought a small flock of adult birds "second hand" that came from a breeder. 2. I have young children. I absolutely will not tolerate a mean bird. I also mostly keep buff orps and I am also worried about them getting bullied. Any experience about their...

    The Legbar Thread!

Ironically, out of three hens I am only getting 2 eggs per week. I was sure they had a hidden nest in the bushes. I did find a nest, but none of the eggs were from the legbars. They just turned 2 years old, so age probably isn't the reason. It has been really hot here, but I thought legbars...

I've only had one legbar rooster. He was great with the hens and always stood guard for them. He was a great flock leader. Unfortunately he was evil towards people. He was mean when we got him, and we were warned by his previous owner. As he got older he got worse. You always had to have a...

    The Legbar Thread!

There are more than a dozen genes that contribute to brown egg color, in addition to some brown inhibiting genes that create white eggs. There are a lot more than one gene and probably more factors involved that we don't know a lot about yet.

Personally, I think the pipping on the wrong end is a humidity issue. My last hatch didn't have so many pip at the wrong end and I kept my humidity lower than I usually do. All of my legbar eggs even hatched last time. :)

I have the cutest Isbar x Araucana crosses. They are small birds, but good layers. One lays a moss green egg and the other more of a mint green. I've hatched out many of their eggs and have some chicks from them in the brooder right now. :)

Now I want some some British standard Araucanas with a crest! LOL They are super cute. I'm hatching some Araucana eggs that are crossed with my legbar/ameraucana rooster. A crested, rumpless blue-egg layer would be my dream bird. :)

Here is a question for all you legbar history/genetics enthusiasts. Where did the crest come from? None of the supposed founding breeds are crested or have anything similar. Any ideas?

I found out my legbars lay defective eggs. That is why they don't hatch, and probably why the breeder sold them off. They have detached air cells when they are laid and the chicks can't develop normally. I have one hen that lays decent eggs. The rest are just very expensive producers of eggs...

Historically CCLs were bred from Barred Plymouth rocks, which are black when they hatch. You must have a hen or rooster (or both) that are throwing the Plymouth rock coloration and the chick is black. Do they start to show barring as they get older? Too bad it probably isn't auto-sexing.

    The Legbar Thread!

This month I did a little experiment with my legbars. I banded all my hens and have been figuring out which hens lay which eggs. I marked their eggs for two weeks and then stuck them in the incubator. I got a 50% hatch rate this time. One hen had a 100% hatch rate, and the others had much...

    The Legbar Thread!

Here are my supposed legbars at 5 weeks. What does everyone think? Do either of them look pure to you? The darker one is a pullet for sure. I'm 90% sure the lighter one is a pullet, but it has a bigger comb that the sister. Sorry for the pics, they wouldn't hold still.
