Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I've seen several discussions on sexing young Ameraucanas by their comb ("females only have one row of peas and males have three"), so I thought I'd share these pictures. A pea comb, by definition, is three rows of peas, so even if the females are less obvious, they should also have three rows...

You should start seeing the darker shanks on wheaten/blue wheaten by the time their adult feathering comes in. By 12-14 weeks, they should be blue.

Just dropping in to say "Hi" :) Here is one of my blue pullets, from the 3/6 or 3/13 hatch, that I'll definitely be watching grow out. :)

The Breeders Directory is usually updated monthly (although there was a gap while we were putting together the new Handbook of about 6 weeks) and is about to be updated this week. My time here on backyardchickens is coming to a close. My duties, hobby, and responsibilities leave me little enough time and I haven't been active here in a while. For anyone that wants to reach me, my email is [email protected].

The Ameraucana Breeders Club did not "fork in two". 21 people resigned in 2015 over a dispute over the 2014 election and started a new club, out of 179. We are now over 300 members and growing.

While it is possible to breed back to correct muffs and beards, why re-invent the wheel? There are several breeders that have gorgeous self-blues available now. @pips&peeps @OnceInaBlueMoon @RavynFallen are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. You can find more on the...

While that may have been true 40-50 years ago, I doubt that it is any longer. Most Easter Eggers and Olive eggers are bred from one of the blue egg laying breeds, mixed with a non-blue egg laying breed. The original "EEs" from which the Araucana and Ameraucana were derived have long since been...

As someone who has sold and shipped a few chicks over the last few years, I'd like to add to this excellent response. :) I just recently had someone ask me if I could hold their chicks for them until they were old enough to sex and I said "no"...here's why. As a small hobby breeder, I...
