No surprises here for us. Healthy heart, healthy liver, masses and masses of "cooked" egg material. I want to post this for educational purposes. Remember, I warned you!

Here is the oviduct, unopened, showing the masses under the tissue.

The largest mass we removed:

All of this was in Rosemary's oviduct:

Interior of the largest mass, which probably amounted to over 1/3 of her weight:

Oh my your poor hen! I am so sorry for her loss, and for the loss of your other one, Lorilei.

I must say you are far much better woman than I, as I am not sure I could bring myself to do the necropsy as you have done.

Thank you for sharing the pictures with us.

That is not good! It makes you think since these girls all came from the same source it has something to do with that. Seems too much coincidence not to have some connection to their genetics.

Poor girl... that is huge!

Question for you on the subject of necropsy:

Other than just opening the body cavity is there any preparation you make, such as draining blood?

Since she died last night, there was no blood flowing. It's best to wet the feathers on the abdomen and slick them down so they wont get in the way. I look at the liver first. If there are no lesions, I'm relieved. Many diseases leave green or yellowish nodules or lesions. Hers was perfect, or seemed so, and had good color. The heart looked good and wasn't enlarged nor did it look anything but healthy to me. As soon as Tom cut the skin on the abdomen, I saw the mass in her oviduct. She hadn't laid an egg in about eight months, to my recollection. Hers were easy to spot.

not enough words or ways to say I'm sorry for your loss... again...
Thank you for being willing to share the necropsy photos; I know it couldn't have been easy to go through this all over again.

Oh my gosh!!! That poor hen! At least she is no longer suffering and you do know now for certain (cause we all know you knew anyway). I'm so sorry for you and all your losses this year. I do hope you don't have another bird come down with this.

Thank you so much for helping educate us on this. I am so sorry for your loss. What does the build-up come from? Is it preventable in any way?
