Shipping Hatching Eggs

I got a very disturbed email about some eggs that I sold on eggbid. This is my first time selling chicken eggs. I have been selling quail eggs for a couple of years. Last summer, I had a lot of trouble with the USPS manhandling the packages and having my eggs all arrive broken. I was very careful with the 7 eggs I packaged. I wrapped each one in toilet tissue, and placed in an egg shipping carton (paper). Then I double wrapped the carton with bubble wrap. I put the wrapped carton in the Medium Flat Rate Box from the USPS with tons of tissue paper and news paper to cushion it. It arrived with at least (from what I could tell in the picture) 4 eggs broken. Can someone please tell me how they package and ship hatching eggs? The box was clearly marked fragile and hatching eggs. The person did not buy the insurance, so the package was not insured.

Hi! I wouldn't consider that adequate wrapping (the tissue and an egg carton) for shipping eggs.
I'm sure loads of folks have used that method and had eggs arrive in hatchable condition, but *I think* if the box gets any sort of abuse --- the eggs will suffer.
There is a sticky thread at the top of this page with methods of wrapping/packing eggs.
Good luck!

I would treat it like they all broke. If those look like that then the rest dont have much of a chance of hatching.

Insurance is a wast, they wont pay for eggs. Any marking on the package makes it more likely to be abused at the sorting table.

This is how I received eggs from Wynette. Fantastic packing! Each egg was individually wrapped in bubble wrap with padding all around them.

The people I have heard the best reports of success with have all used bubble wrap to protect each individual egg. I just received 14 eggs today that where wrapped in paper towel. All but one are not looking good. one was cracked but not leaking, 7 show definite broken air cells. 6 of the others I cannot see a bubble moving in but also do not see an air cell at the rounded end. and only 1 looks like it may still be good. that is a 7% success rate with that wrapping method and there was a considerable amount of towel around each one. The problem I see is that even if the paper towel or toilet paper in your case, is thick. it does not absorb shock.

This is how I ship my eggs. Then I cover the top with another piece of foam so that it is nice and snug and tie them together to make sure they don't seperate if needed.

I haven't had any reported breakage.

I received a dozen eggs earlier this week that I was very pleased with.

The bottom of the box was stuffed tight with plastic shopping bags, to about halfway full. Then, an egg flat was placed on top of the bags, and individually bubble-wrapped bantam eggs were placed in the egg flat, another egg flat was on top of them, sandwiching them between the two, and the rest of the box was stuffed tightly with packing peanuts. When I opened the box and started digging in there, packing peanuts went spilling everywhere.

If you want the eggs to arrive safely, you can't cheap out on the packaging. It takes several feet of bubble wrap, and lots of "stuffing" (i.e. packing peanuts, or crumpled newspaper) to cushion the eggs for the journey.

Of the dozen eggs I received, none were broken/cracked, and just one had a broken air cell when I candled before setting them. The box was pristine - no damage at all, so I have high hopes for my hatch, and I gave the seller very good feedback.

If you look at the bubble wrap burrito method in the link above. Keep in mind those eggs have at least 5 layers of bubble wrap around them before they are then surrounded by large cell bubble wrap.

DO NOT put on the box Fragile or anything that indicates it's eggs. 9 out 10 times those eggs end up broken at least the ones I have recieved.

The only time I put stuff on the box is if the person requiste it. done it twice this year and eggs got broken or shaken with broken air cells.
