I am thinking of reducing the number of flocks I have and would just like to take a little poll.

If you where looking to buy hatching eggs, what breed are you LEAST likely to buy? There is not right or wrong just would like to know what you don't look for on the BST......

I have some ideas of what sells and not, but wanted to double check. I have a few other projects in the works too.

Donna, 3-4 year ago the well advertised Marans were selling for $75-100 a dozen and now there is really no market for the eggs with all the faults.

I think if you check around there is a reason Bantams sell easier that large fowl. Over the years have had most all breeds in large numbers. What I would do is keep the breeds or breed that you like most and go from there.

I like them all

for different reasons.

i voted on 4. not because i don't like the chickens but those just aren't my favorites. I am likely to bid on anything if the price is right and my incubator is getting closed to empty.

i'd suggest have 1 pen for each breed/color group, putting all blue/black/splash together, instead of having 2-3 separate pens for them, and do away with the mixed breeds. you can get mutts anywhere IMO. that way you can narrow down the number of pens and concentrate on improving the breeds you want to concentrate on.

personally i'd also do away with any blue/splash roos, and keep just the blue/splash hens, then you've just got blue/black copper marans, etc.

if it were me dealing with what sells around here, i'd have the wyandottes, wheaten/blue wheaten ameraucanas, and the copper and cuckoo marans. 5 pens.

the swaps are FULL of rocks and leghorns selling for $5 -10 each. wyandottes and marans pullets are snatched up as fast as they get there, the roos a bit slower unless you sell them only as pairs/trios. ameraucana/easter eggers sell OK but not as chicks, only as pullets it seems. roos go for meat price ($5 each).

Well the BBS I don't have but could, just wanted to know if there was demand for Splash marans IDK. I do get call for just Blacks so I think I would have a black only pen and a blue pen (would make splash)

Your answer was PERFECT! Thanks! BTW I have 14 pens so only looking to thin down to 8 or 10 max so I can have grow out pens for roos and pullets. Some of these will require more than one pen.

Sorry I didn't read before I posted. I thought you wanted to know what breeds you should keep . Didnt catch the egg selling part.

What did you vote for? and what would you NOT buy? I will keep the info and factor it in when I make my mind up

Haven't heard of Super Blue Egg Layers before but if they are as flighty as the Leghorns they would be my second pick as least likely to buy. The breeds I buy are relatively good layers (like Plymouth Rocks) but are more likely to have a better disposition.
