For the past year of owning chickens I have used just ivermec sheep pour on for control of parasites and internal worms. I did research and read in several places that in treats All worms.. I found out the hard way that this isn't true.
I purchased a nice silkie about to months ago to join my flock, she seemed a bit lethargic when I got her home so I wormed her with ivermec and put her in quarantine. Over the next few months she didn't improve. I followed all the recommendations for a sick chicken and gave her some different medicines. She died a few days ago.
Because I was curious as to what she died from I did an autopsy, thinking maybe I would find cancer or a blockage In her gut. Wrong again!
I took the courage up and cut her open and took all the guts out. Definitely not for the weak stomach, it smells (and looks) disgusting! Both caecals were inflamed but other then that I couldn't see much wrong.
I them decided to cut her intestine to look inside to check for damage. Thats when u saw it.. The intestines almost burst open! Absolutely infested with round worms! Still all wriggling around. My poor baby! No wonder she died!
If I just did a simple faecal test at the beginning she might still be here but my ignorance and my belief that ivermec was effective probably killed her!

My lesson, buy wormer that's designed for chickens that specifically states kills all worms..

Sorry for your loss. I've known this about ivomec products from personal experience. I've used ivermectin pour on and eprinex for worming in the past and couldnt figure why I was seeing large roundworms in feces a month after dosing with either product. I switched to valbazen (albendazole) and panacur (fenbendazole) and havnt looked back since. I found this link several years ago regarding ivomec, it is ineffective as a wormer in chickens:

Yes I'm going into town today to see what is available - I'm in Australia so they might be called something different here. Unfortunately their are so many threads still stating that it is effective.. I didnt see and worms in her poo but they were watery.

Here's a link for you:

It looks like Avitrol Plus is an excellent wormer. It contains levamisole and praziquantel. Good luck.

I’m really sorry for your loss, it’s always hard to loose one 😢

So I am new to deworming...I just used ivermectin pour-on, several drops on the back of their necks. This will not help with worms? Just perhaps external parasites? What is considered a “for poultry” wormer in the United States, because I can’t find anything at the stores. Thanks!!!

How much do they weigh? The pour-on dose is 0.1 ml per pound of bodyweight.

Ivermectin pour on is off label for poultry as are most wormers. In post #2 above I mentioned how Ivermectin pour on was ineffective. I dont use it.
The benzimidazole wormers are best: Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer and Safeguard liquid goat wormer are the go to wormers for poultry.
